Medium severity Installation Code: Can't Add Printer

Can't add a printer in Windows

The "Add a printer" wizard fails, doesn't find the device, or errors out. You can almost always add it manually by IP or with a local port.

Symptoms

  • Wizard finds nothing
  • "Windows couldn't connect to the printer"
  • Add fails with an error code

Likely causes

  • Discovery blocked on the network
  • Print Spooler issue
  • Missing driver
  • Network printer on a different subnet

How to fix it — step by step

Work through these in order; most people are fixed by the first two or three.

Add by TCP/IP address

Add printer › "The printer that I want isn't listed" › "Add using IP address" › enter the printer's IP (from its network report).

Restart the Print Spooler

services.msc › Print Spooler › Restart, then try again.

Pre-install the driver

Install the model driver first so it's available to select during Add Printer.

Run the printer troubleshooter

Settings › System › Troubleshoot › Other troubleshooters › Printer.
