Medium severity Installation Code: Driver Install Failed

Printer driver installation fails or rolls back

The driver setup errors out, hangs, or rolls back before finishing. This usually comes from a leftover old driver, a blocked download, or running the wrong package for your OS.

Symptoms

  • Installer freezes or errors
  • Setup "rolls back" at the end
  • "A driver is already installed" warning

Likely causes

  • Conflicting old driver
  • Wrong OS/architecture package
  • Antivirus or permissions blocking setup
  • Corrupt download

How to fix it — step by step

Work through these in order; most people are fixed by the first two or three.

Remove the old driver first

Uninstall the existing printer software from Apps, then in "Print server properties" (Win+R › printui /s /t2) remove the leftover driver package, and reboot.

Download the full package for your exact OS

Get the full driver/software for your precise model and Windows/macOS version from the manufacturer — not a generic or older build.

Run as administrator

Right-click the installer › Run as administrator. Temporarily pause antivirus if it blocks the setup.

Connect only when asked

For USB installs, don't plug in the printer until the installer tells you to.

Still not fixed? For hardware faults still under warranty, contact the manufacturer's official support. This is an independent guide — always confirm steps for your exact model in its manual.
