Medium severity Hardware Code: Ink Cartridge Problem HP

HP "Ink Cartridge Problem" / missing or incompatible

HP reports a problem with one or more cartridges — missing, damaged, counterfeit, or incompatible. Reseating, cleaning contacts, and matching firmware usually clears it.

Symptoms

  • "Problem with printhead/ink"
  • "One or more cartridges are missing"
  • "Incompatible/counterfeit" warning

Likely causes

  • Tape left on contacts
  • Dirty contacts
  • Cartridge not seated
  • Firmware rejecting non-HP chips

How to fix it — step by step

Work through these in order; most people are fixed by the first two or three.

Reseat and remove tape

Remove each cartridge, peel any tape off the contacts, and reinstall firmly until it clicks.

Clean the contacts

Wipe the copper contacts on the cartridge and inside the carriage with a dry, lint-free cloth.

Identify the faulty one

Install cartridges one at a time to find the unit triggering the error.

Genuine vs third-party

If a firmware update started rejecting third-party ink, fit a genuine HP cartridge to confirm the slot works, or use cartridges made for the current firmware.
