High severity Hardware Code: Printhead Problem HP

HP "Problem with Printhead"

HP can't communicate with or detect the printhead. On models with a removable printhead you can reseat and clean it; on others a reset is the main option.

Symptoms

  • "Problem with printhead" message
  • Missing colors / no output
  • Printer won't finish initializing

Likely causes

  • Printhead not seated
  • Clogged/dirty printhead
  • Air in the system after running dry
  • Electronic fault

How to fix it — step by step

Work through these in order; most people are fixed by the first two or three.

Reseat the printhead (if removable)

Unlatch and remove the printhead, wipe the contacts, then reinstall and lock it down firmly.

Run an automated cleaning

From the printer tools or HP Smart, run printhead cleaning once or twice and allow rest time between cycles.

Hard reset

Unplug power for 60 seconds with the printer on, then reconnect and retry.

Manual printhead clean

For stubborn clogs on removable printheads, dab the nozzles with a lint-free cloth and warm distilled water, dry, and reinstall.
