Medium severity Hardware Code: Grinding Noise

Printer making a grinding or clunking noise

An unusual grinding, clicking or clunking noise usually means something is stuck in the mechanism, packing material was left in, or a gear/roller is struggling.

Symptoms

  • Grinding or clicking during printing or startup
  • Carriage stutters
  • Noise then an error

Likely causes

  • Packing material/tape left inside
  • Paper scrap or foreign object
  • Debris on the carriage rail or gears
  • Worn rollers/gears

How to fix it — step by step

Work through these in order; most people are fixed by the first two or three.

Power off and inspect

Turn the printer off, open all covers and remove any packing tape, foam, paper scraps or foreign objects from the paper path and carriage area.

Clear and clean the rail

On inkjets, gently move the carriage and wipe its metal rail; debris or dried ink there causes grinding.

Reseat consumables

Make sure cartridges/toner and the duplex unit are seated correctly — a misaligned part can bind the gears.

Service if it persists

If the noise continues with nothing obstructing it, a gear or roller may be worn and need professional repair.
