Medium severity Hardware Code: Scanner Not Working

Scanner on an all-in-one won't work

The printer side works but scanning fails or the computer "can't communicate with the scanner". Network scanning in particular needs the right connection and software.

Symptoms

  • "Cannot communicate with scanner"
  • Scan button does nothing
  • Scanner not listed in software

Likely causes

  • Scan software/driver missing
  • Printer offline or wrong IP for network scan
  • WIA/scan service stopped
  • Firewall blocking scan

How to fix it — step by step

Work through these in order; most people are fixed by the first two or three.

Install the full software

Network scanning usually needs the full driver/software bundle (not just a print driver). Reinstall it for your model.

Check the connection

Confirm the printer is online and on the same network; if its IP changed, update the scan-to-computer setup.

Restart scan services (Windows)

services.msc › make sure "Windows Image Acquisition (WIA)" is running and set to Automatic.

Allow scanning through the firewall

Permit the scan app/ports in your firewall, or temporarily disable it to test.
