USB printer not detected by the computer

The printer is plugged in over USB but the computer doesn't see it. Often a cable, port, or driver-order problem.

Symptoms

  • Printer absent from device list
  • No reaction when plugged in
  • "Unknown USB device"

Likely causes

  • Faulty cable or front-panel/hub port
  • Driver not installed (or installed before connecting)
  • USB selective suspend powering it down
  • Damaged USB port

How to fix it — step by step

Work through these in order; most people are fixed by the first two or three.

Try another cable and a rear port

Use a known-good USB cable directly into a rear motherboard port (not a hub or front panel). Keep the cable under ~6 ft.

Install the driver, then connect

Run the printer software first and plug in the USB only when prompted.

Disable USB selective suspend

Control Panel › Power Options › advanced › USB settings › disable "USB selective suspend".

Check Device Manager

Look for the printer (or an unknown device) under Device Manager; uninstall it, unplug/replug, and let Windows redetect.
