Canon printer — frequently asked questions

Quick answers to the questions we hear most about Canon printers, plus general printing tips that apply to every brand.

Canon questions

How do I set up a Canon PIXMA on Wi-Fi?

Go to ij.start.canon for your model, install the Canon PRINT app, and use "Cableless setup" (or WPS) from the printer's Wireless LAN menu. Connect to a 2.4GHz network — most PIXMA models don't support 5GHz.

What does Canon error B200 mean?

B200 is a printhead problem (often overheating or a clog). Power off and unplug for 5–10 minutes; if it returns, remove and rinse the printhead with warm distilled water, dry it fully, and reinstall. A recurring B200 usually means the printhead needs replacing.

My Canon shows error 5B00 — can I fix it myself?

5B00 means the waste-ink absorber is full. The proper fix is replacing the pad at a service center. A service-mode counter reset can keep it printing temporarily, but the pad still needs attention to avoid ink overflow.

What is the difference between PIXMA and MegaTank (G-series)?

Standard PIXMA models use cartridges; MegaTank (PIXMA G) models use refillable ink bottles that dramatically lower cost-per-page, making them better for high-volume printing.

General printing questions

Why does my printer say it is offline when it is turned on?

Almost always a communication issue, not a hardware fault. Power-cycle the printer, router and computer; make sure both devices are on the same Wi-Fi; clear the print queue; and uncheck "Use Printer Offline" in the print queue. If it keeps happening, reserve a static IP for the printer in your router.

How do I find the right driver for my printer?

Download the full driver/software package for your exact model number and your operating system (e.g. Windows 11 64-bit or your macOS version) from the manufacturer's official support site. Avoid generic or older drivers — match the model and OS precisely.

My printer prints blank pages — what should I check first?

On inkjets, run a nozzle check and one or two head cleanings (clogged nozzles are the top cause). Confirm cartridges aren't empty and tape is removed. On lasers, make sure you peeled the protective strip off new toner. Also set the driver paper-type to match your paper.

How often should I update my printer's firmware?

Update when you hit a bug, add a new OS, or the manufacturer flags a security fix. Many printers update automatically over Wi-Fi. Always get firmware from the official site or the brand's app, and don't power off mid-update.

Can I use third-party or refilled ink and toner?

Often yes, and it can save money, but a firmware update may reject some third-party chips and quality varies. If a cartridge isn't recognized, reseat it, clean the contacts, and confirm it's rated for your printer's current firmware. A genuine cartridge is the quickest way to confirm the slot itself works.

Is this an official manufacturer support site?

No. PrinterSupport.io is an independent help resource for users in the USA and Canada. We are not affiliated with any printer manufacturer. All brand and product names are trademarks of their respective owners — always confirm drivers, firmware and specs on the manufacturer's official website.
