What is Wi-Fi Direct printing and how to use it

Wi-Fi Direct lets you print without a router by connecting your device straight to the printer. It's handy for guests, travel, or when your network is down.

How it works

The printer creates its own private Wi-Fi network that your phone or laptop joins directly. You can print even if the printer isn't connected to your home Wi-Fi — useful for visitors or in a pinch.

How to connect

  1. Enable Wi-Fi Direct in the printer's network settings and note its Wi-Fi Direct name and password.
  2. On your device, open Wi-Fi settings and join the network named DIRECT-xx-YourPrinter.
  3. Enter the Wi-Fi Direct password (shown on the printer or printed on a network page).
  4. Print as usual and select the printer.

Things to know

  • While connected to Wi-Fi Direct, your device usually loses normal internet over Wi-Fi.
  • It's great for occasional printing, not as a permanent setup.
  • Change the default Wi-Fi Direct password for better security.
