Buying Advice

Inkjet vs laser printers: which is right for you?

The inkjet-or-laser decision comes down to what you print, how much, and whether color matters. Here's a plain-English breakdown.

Updated March 2024

Choose inkjet if…

  • You print photos or color graphics and want the best color and borderless prints.
  • Your volume is low-to-moderate, or you choose an ink-tank model for higher volume.
  • You want a low purchase price and a compact all-in-one.

Choose laser if…

  • You mostly print black-and-white text documents.
  • You print in higher volumes and want speed and a low cost-per-page.
  • You print infrequently and hate dealing with clogged nozzles — toner doesn't dry out.

The running-cost reality

Traditional cartridge inkjets are cheap to buy but expensive per page. Ink-tank inkjets (EcoTank, MegaTank, Smart Tank) flip that — higher upfront cost, very low cost-per-page. Mono lasers sit in the middle with cheap, reliable text printing. If you print alot, total cost over a few years matters far more than the sticker price.

A simple rule of thumb

Mostly documents, want speed and low hassle → mono laser. Photos and color, lower volume → inkjet. High color volume → ink-tank inkjet. Need color documents in an office → color laser.

Frequently asked questions

Do laser printers really cost less per page?

For black-and-white text, usually yes — high-yield toner produces thousands of pages cheaply. Color laser and ink-tank costs vary, so compare yield and price.

Will an inkjet clog if I don't use it often?

It can. If you print rarely and mostly in black, a laser avoids clog problems entirely.
