Windows error 0x00000709 - cannot set the default printer

What causes it

• Windows is managing the default printer automatically and overwriting your choice
• The registry value that stores the default printer is corrupt or has restrictive permissions
• The printer you selected is a shared queue whose host is offline or renamed
• A previous printer with the same name was removed but left registry remnants
• Group Policy is enforcing a default printer on a managed machine

How to fix it, in order

Work down the list and stop when the printer recovers. The steps are ordered from most likely and least invasive to last resort.

1. Turn off automatic default printer management

   Open Settings › Bluetooth & devices › Printers & scanners and scroll to the bottom. Switch off Let Windows manage my default printer. While that setting is on, Windows resets the default to whatever you printed to last at your current location, which can look exactly like your choice being rejected.

2. Set the default from the printer's own page

   Still in Printers & scanners, click the printer you want, then click Set as default on its detail page. Setting it here rather than from an old Control Panel dialog often succeeds when the legacy path fails, because it goes through the modern settings provider.

3. Verify the printer is actually reachable

   If the target is a shared printer, confirm the host PC is powered on and that you can reach it. For a network printer, print a configuration page from the panel and check the IP still matches the port Windows uses. Windows will not accept a default it cannot currently talk to.

4. Restart the Print Spooler

   Press Windows+R, type services.msc, press Enter, right-click Print Spooler and choose Restart. Then try setting the default again immediately. A spooler that has lost its handle on the printer list will refuse the write until it reloads.

5. Clear stale queues

   In Printers & scanners, remove any printer entries you no longer own, especially duplicates ending in Copy1 or (1). Old entries can hold the name Windows is trying to assign, producing a conflict that surfaces as 0x00000709.

6. Run the printer troubleshooter

   Go to Settings › System › Troubleshoot › Other troubleshooters and run Printer. It checks spooler health, service dependencies and default assignment, and can repair permission problems on the relevant registry keys without you editing them by hand.

7. Remove and re-add the printer

   Select the printer, choose Remove, restart the PC, then add it again through Add device. A fresh install writes a clean name into the registry, which is usually enough when a rename or driver change left the old entry inconsistent.

8. Check for a policy-enforced default

   On a work or school PC, an administrator can pin the default printer through Group Policy, and your change will be reverted every time policy refreshes. If the default snaps back within minutes on a managed device, this is almost certainly why. Ask IT rather than fighting it locally.
