"Driver Is Unavailable" on Windows 11? What It Means and How to Fix It

"Driver is unavailable" is Windows telling you it can still see your printer but no longer has a driver it can use to print through. The device is fine. What has broken is the software layer between Windows and the printer, and it almost always breaks for the same reason: a Windows update replaced, superseded or invalidated the driver you were using.

Quick fixes first

1. Restart the computer. A surprising number of cases are a driver that failed to load and simply needs another chance.
2. Check Settings › Windows Update › Advanced options › Optional updates › Driver updates and install anything listed for your printer.
3. Remove the printer at Settings › Bluetooth & devices › Printers & scanners › Remove device.
4. Press Win+R, run printui /s /t2, and remove the old driver and package.
5. Reboot, then install the current full driver package for your model and Windows 11.

Why this happens

Windows stores printer drivers in a driver store and binds each printer queue to one of them. That binding can break in several ways, and feature updates touch all of them.

Microsoft has been steadily deprecating third-party printer drivers. Windows 11 increasingly prefers class drivers and the IPP printing stack over vendor packages, and during major updates it will retire drivers it considers obsolete or unsigned to current standards. If the driver your printer was bound to is removed, the queue survives but has nothing behind it - which is exactly the message you are seeing.

A second cause is version mismatch. A driver written for an older Windows build can install and then fail to load against a newer kernel. And since Windows 10 support ended on 14 October 2025, several manufacturers have stopped publishing new builds for it entirely, so a machine still on Windows 10 may simply have run out of supported drivers.

The third cause is corruption: an interrupted update, a failed install, or a spooler crash that left the driver store inconsistent.

Fix 1: Let Windows Update supply the driver

This is the fastest route and people skip it because the driver is not offered automatically.

1. Go to Settings › Windows Update and install all pending updates, including any that need a restart.
2. Then go to Advanced options › Optional updates › Driver updates.
3. Tick anything naming your printer or manufacturer and install it.
4. Restart, then check the printer's status in Printers & scanners.

HP, Brother, Canon, Epson, Lexmark and Xerox all publish through Windows Update for a large part of their current ranges. If a driver appears here, it is signed, current and tested against your build - preferable to hunting one down manually.

Fix 2: Clean removal, then reinstall

Installing a new driver over a broken one usually fails, because Windows will not overwrite a package the spooler has loaded. Do it properly:

1. Remove the device. Settings › Bluetooth & devices › Printers & scanners › select the printer › Remove device. Remove every duplicate entry for the same printer.
2. Uninstall vendor software. Settings › Apps › Installed apps - remove drivers, scan utilities and update assistants for that manufacturer.
3. Remove the driver package. Win+R, printui /s /t2, Drivers tab, select the model, Remove, and choose Remove driver and driver package. If Windows says it is in use, open services.msc, stop the Print Spooler, remove the package, then start the spooler.
4. Check ports. On Windows 11 Pro, run printmanagement.msc and look under All Ports for orphaned entries pointing at the old printer.
5. Reboot.
6. Install the full package for your exact model number and Windows 11, from the manufacturer's own site.

If the installer itself fails or rolls back, work through printer driver installation fails or rolls back before retrying.

Fix 3: Get the right download

Three details decide whether a package will work:

• The exact model number, including suffix. Manufacturers use different suffixes per region for the same hardware. A driver for a US model may install and then refuse to bind to the UK or Australian variant of the same printer.
• Windows 11, and the right architecture. 64-bit for almost everything; Arm64 if you have a Snapdragon-based machine, where a x64 printer driver will not load.
• The full package, not the basic driver. The basic driver prints; the full package includes scanning, which is why all-in-one owners often find the scanner missing after a minimal install. See scanner not working.

Fix 4: Use a universal or driverless option

If no Windows 11 driver exists for your model - common on printers more than about eight years old - you still have two good options.

Universal print drivers

Most manufacturers publish a single driver covering entire ranges. The Lexmark Universal Print Driver, HP's Universal Print Driver, and equivalents from Brother and Xerox will drive models they were never specifically written for. You lose some model-specific options but gain a driver that is actively maintained.

Driverless printing

Windows 11 supports IPP Everywhere and Mopria natively, and from July 2026 new Windows 11 installations default to Windows Ready Print, which uses that stack rather than vendor drivers. To use it, add the printer at Printers & scanners › Add device and let Windows pick the built-in class driver.

The trade-off is worth stating plainly, because it catches people out: driverless printing can remove automatic duplex options, tray and media selection, secure PIN release, colour management and scan-to-PC. If duplex has stopped appearing since an update, that is very likely what happened - see double-sided printing not working. For a single-function laser it costs you almost nothing; for an all-in-one you use for scanning, install the vendor package.

Fix 5: Rule out the port and the spooler

A driver can be perfectly healthy while the queue behind it is not.

Open Printer properties › Ports. If the printer is on a WSD port, that is a common source of instability - WSD ports go stale when the printer's address changes and are harder to repair than TCP/IP ports. Add a Standard TCP/IP Port pointing at the printer's address instead, and reserve that address in your router so it cannot change. The procedure is in printer shows offline.

If the Print Spooler is crashing, every driver operation will appear to fail regardless of what you install. Check it at services.msc; if it stops on its own, fix that first using print spooler keeps stopping.

Fix 6: Repair Windows components

If drivers refuse to install on an otherwise healthy system, the component store may be damaged. From an administrator terminal:

1. sfc /scannow
2. DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
3. Reboot and re-run sfc /scannow to confirm it comes back clean.

Also run the printer troubleshooter at Settings › System › Troubleshoot › Other troubleshooters › Printer, which resets the spooler and re-detects devices automatically.

Brand-specific notes

HP Easy Start handles removal and reinstall in one pass and is the cleanest HP route on both Windows and macOS. Brother's Full Driver and Software Package is the one to choose if you scan. Model-specific downloads are linked from HP, Canon, Epson and Brother.

macOS equivalent

macOS does not use this wording, but the equivalent state exists: a printer that will not accept jobs after an OS upgrade. Remove it at System Settings › Printers & Scanners and add it again, which rebinds it to a current driver. On macOS 26 Tahoe, also grant Privacy & Security › Local Network permission to the apps you print from, or network printers will not be discoverable at all. If the list is corrupt, Control-click inside it and choose Reset printing system.

If nothing worked

A printer that still shows unavailable after a clean removal, a current driver and a repaired component store is unusual. At that point the practical options narrow to two: add the printer through the driverless stack, which sidesteps vendor drivers entirely and will get you printing today; or, if the machine is old enough that no maintained driver exists in any form, accept that support has ended for it.

That last case is the only genuine cost decision here, and it is a replacement decision rather than a repair one - there is nothing to fix in the hardware.
