The Lexmark Universal Print Driver is a single Windows driver that prints to more than two hundred Lexmark models, which makes it the standard choice for print servers and managed desktops. It is WHQL-signed, ships in 27 languages and includes a configuration utility so administrators can pre-set defaults such as duplex, mono and hole-punch behaviour before deployment. macOS works differently: instead of a universal driver, Lexmark publishes two packages, UC1 for colour printers and UM1 for mono printers. Lexmark is now part of Xerox, and Xerox tools have started adding Lexmark support alongside.

Version and licence: Free. The Windows UPD version 2 package is at 3.0.4.0 and is about 126 MB. It is WHQL-signed, covers more than 200 models and ships in 27 languages. macOS uses the separate Lexmark UC1 package for colour devices and UM1 for mono devices. About 126 MB for the Windows package.

What it does

  • Covers more than 200 Lexmark models from one driver
  • WHQL-signed for Windows deployment
  • Available in 27 languages
  • Configuration utility for pre-setting defaults before deployment
  • PCL and PostScript emulation options
  • Automatic detection of trays, duplex and finishing options
  • Separate macOS packages for colour and mono hardware

How to install it

  1. Step 1

Open the Lexmark Universal Print Driver support page and choose the Windows package, or on macOS pick UC1 for a colour printer or UM1 for a mono one.

  2. Step 2

Download the package and extract it to a local folder rather than running from inside the archive.

  3. Step 3

Run the installer as an administrator and accept the licence.

  4. Step 4

Choose whether to install a print queue immediately or only to stage the driver on the system.

  5. Step 5

Enter the printer's IP address or hostname when asked, or let the installer discover devices on the subnet.

  6. Step 6

Let the driver query the printer so trays and finishers are configured; if that fails, set them in Printer Properties, Configuration.

  7. Step 7

Set defaults in Printing Preferences, particularly duplex and black and white, then print a test page.

Which printers it supports

More than 200 Lexmark laser and inkjet models, spanning current CX, MX, CS, MS, MB and B ranges and many earlier T, E and X series devices.

When Lexmark Universal Print Driver will not work

Trays or the finisher are not available in the print dialog

The driver could not query the device. Open Printer Properties, Configuration and set the installed options manually, or allow SNMP traffic to the printer so automatic detection can work.

The installer cannot find the printer

Discovery does not cross subnets in most networks. Enter the printer's IP address directly, which creates a standard TCP/IP port and works regardless of segmentation.

Jobs print but confidential print is missing

Held and confidential print settings appear in Printing Preferences under the print and hold section, and they must also be enabled on the device. Check the Embedded Web Server settings with an administrator.

There is no universal driver for macOS

Correct. Lexmark ships UC1 for colour printers and UM1 for mono printers rather than a single universal package. Choose the one that matches your hardware.

Deployment through Group Policy fails

Confirm the package architecture matches the clients, add the print server to the point-and-print trusted server list, and check driver signing policy. The Windows event log will name the specific failure.

Frequently asked questions

How many models does it cover?

More than 200, which is why it is the standard choice for Lexmark fleets rather than per-model drivers.

Is there a macOS universal driver?

No. macOS uses the Lexmark UC1 package for colour printers and UM1 for mono printers.

Does Xerox owning Lexmark affect the driver?

The Lexmark driver continues as before. Separately, Xerox tools such as the Print and Scan Experience have added Lexmark printer support.
