Printer Not Printing? Why Nothing Comes Out and How to Fix It (Windows 11, Mac, HP, Canon, Epson, Brother)
When a printer accepts a job and prints nothing, the cause is almost always the wrong printer selected, a paused or jammed queue, or a driver that has stopped talking to the hardware.

If your printer is connected and shows Ready but nothing comes out, the fault is almost never mechanical. In practice it is one of four things: the job went to a different printer, the queue is jammed by a corrupt document, the printer is paused, or the driver has stopped communicating with the hardware. Each has a specific test, and you can narrow it to the right one in about two minutes.
Quick fixes first
- Look at the printer's own screen or status lights. If it is showing a message, that message is the answer - deal with it before touching the computer.
- Print a self-test or configuration page from the printer's control panel. Does it come out?
- Open the print queue, cancel every job, then send one short test page.
- Check that the printer you are sending to is the right one and is set as the default.
- Restart the Print Spooler: press Win+R, type
services.msc, right-click Print Spooler and choose Restart.

Why this happens
Printing is a chain with several links: the application renders the document, the driver converts it, the spooler queues it, the port carries it, and the printer interprets it. A break anywhere makes the job disappear with no visible error. Windows in particular hides most failures - a job that cannot be rendered simply vanishes from the queue rather than throwing an error message.
The largest single cause is a duplicate or wrong destination. Windows creates entries like "HP OfficeJet (Copy 1)" or "HP OfficeJet Pro 9015 (Network)" alongside the working one, and its "Let Windows manage my default printer" setting silently switches the default to whatever you used last - including Microsoft Print to PDF. Users then send jobs into a queue that leads nowhere.
Fix 1: Prove where the fault is with a self-test
Before any software troubleshooting, print a page from the printer itself. The path varies: HP models usually offer Settings › Reports › Printer Status Report, Canon PIXMA has Setup › Device settings › Print test page or a nozzle check, Epson uses Settings › General Settings › Print Status Sheet, and Brother uses Menu › Print Reports › Printer Settings.
- Page prints: the hardware, supplies and paper path are fine. Everything below applies to the computer side.
- Page does not print but the printer tries: look at print quality troubleshooting instead, starting with printer prints blank pages.
- Nothing happens at all: check for an error condition - open doors, jammed paper, or a supply the printer refuses to run without.
Fix 2: Send to the right printer, and stop Windows changing it
Open Settings › Bluetooth & devices › Printers & scanners. Scroll to the bottom and turn off "Let Windows manage my default printer". Then select the printer you actually use and click Set as default.
While you are there, remove duplicates. Every stale entry is a place jobs can go to die. Select each unused entry and choose Remove device. Keep exactly one queue per physical printer.
Fix 3: Unblock the queue
Open Printers & scanners › your printer › Open print queue. In the Printer menu, untick Pause Printing and Use Printer Offline. Then cancel all documents.
If a job sticks at Deleting and will not clear, the spool file is corrupt and only a service restart will shift it:
- Press Win+R, type
services.msc, press Enter. - Right-click Print Spooler and choose Stop.
- Open
C:\Windows\System32\spool\PRINTERSand delete every file inside it. - Return to Services, right-click Print Spooler, choose Start, and set Startup type to Automatic.
If the spooler stops again on its own within minutes, a driver is crashing it - see print spooler keeps stopping and clear a stuck print queue.
Fix 4: Check what the printer is waiting for
Printers frequently accept a job then stall waiting for a condition the driver never reports back. The most common are:
- Paper size mismatch. The document is Letter, the tray is set to A4, and the printer waits silently. Set the tray size on the printer panel and the paper size in the driver to match.
- Manual feed selected. A previous job set the source to the multipurpose tray. Reset the paper source to Auto Select.
- A supply the printer will not run without. Many all-in-ones stop entirely when any single colour is empty, even for a black-only document. Replacing the empty cartridge is the only reliable route; see ink or toner not recognized if a new cartridge is not being read.
- Secure or PIN release printing. On office machines the job waits at the device until you enter your PIN at the panel.
Fix 5: Reinstall the driver properly
A half-removed driver causes jobs to vanish without error. Do a clean reinstall rather than installing over the top:
- Remove the printer from Printers & scanners.
- Uninstall the vendor software from Settings › Apps › Installed apps.
- Press Win+R, type
printui /s /t2, select the leftover driver package for your model and click Remove, choosing to remove the driver and package. - Reboot.
- Install the full driver and software package for your exact model and for Windows 11 - not a generic or older build.
If the installer fails partway, work through printer driver installation fails or rolls back.
Fix 6: On a Mac
Open System Settings › Printers & Scanners, select the printer and click Print Queue. Click Resume if the queue is paused, and clear any held jobs.
On macOS 26 Tahoe, apps must be granted Local Network access before they can reach a network printer. Check System Settings › Privacy & Security › Local Network and enable the toggle for the app you are printing from and for the printer's own software.
When the queue is beyond saving, Control-click inside the printer list and choose Reset printing system, then add the printer again with the plus button. This wipes all queues and settings, so treat it as a last resort - but it clears corruption nothing else reaches.
Brand-specific notes
HP
Run HP Print and Scan Doctor on Windows; it resets ports, restarts the spooler and repairs the queue automatically. The HP Smart app, now also called the HP app, will tell you whether the printer is reachable from your account. If the printer stops on a cartridge message, see HP ink cartridge problem.
Canon
PIXMA models stop for support codes shown on the panel or in the Canon PRINT app. Note the number before troubleshooting - support code 1300 is a jam, and 5B00 is a waste ink limit that halts printing outright. More at our Canon hub.
Epson
EcoTank models refuse to print when a tank reads empty even if ink is visible - the counter, not the level, controls this. Reset the ink level in the Epson Smart Panel app after refilling. A WorkForce that accepts jobs then does nothing is often waiting on a maintenance box.
Brother
Brother lasers stop dead on Replace Toner and Replace Drum messages. Both have panel-based reset sequences after fitting the new part. Brother machines also enter deep sleep aggressively; jobs sent while asleep can be dropped rather than queued.
Matching the symptom to the fix
| Symptom | Likely cause | Start at |
|---|---|---|
| Job disappears instantly, no error | Wrong printer or crashed driver | Fix 2 and Fix 5 |
| Job stuck at Spooling or Printing | Corrupt spool file | Fix 3 |
| Queue empty, printer idle, nothing prints | Paused printer or wrong default | Fix 2 and Fix 3 |
| Printer panel shows a message | Paper, supply or door condition | Fix 4 |
| Self-test prints, computer jobs do not | Driver, port or network | Fix 5 |
| Broke immediately after an update | Driver replaced or default reset | Fix 5 |
If nothing worked
When the printer's own self-test also fails and the panel shows no message, you are looking at a hardware fault - typically a failed formatter board, a dead motor or, on inkjets, a printhead that has stopped responding. Before spending anything, weigh the numbers honestly. A workshop diagnostic in most markets starts around the price of a new entry-level all-in-one, and parts for consumer models are often unavailable at any price.
Repair genuinely makes sense in three situations: the machine is a business-class laser with a low page count, it is an ink tank model with a full set of expensive ink still inside, or it is still under warranty. Otherwise, replacement is usually the rational call - and if you are replacing, our guide to choosing a printer for a home office covers what to prioritise.
If you would rather have someone drive the driver removal, spooler cleanup and reinstall for you, you can get help from a printer specialist over a screen share.

Frequently asked questions
Why does my printer say printing but nothing happens?
The job has reached the spooler but not the printer, or the printer received it and is waiting on a condition such as the wrong paper size, an open door or a low supply. Check the printer's own panel for a message first, then clear the queue and send a single test page. If the queue will not clear, restart the Print Spooler service.
How do I clear a print job that will not delete?
Press Win+R, type services.msc, stop the Print Spooler service, then delete everything inside C:\Windows\System32\spool\PRINTERS and start the service again. This removes the corrupt spool file that is blocking the queue. Nothing else in that folder needs to be preserved.
My printer worked before the Windows update and now it does not. What changed?
Feature updates can replace a vendor driver with the built-in driverless stack, reset the default printer or invalidate the printer port. Reinstall the full vendor driver package for your exact model and Windows version, and re-check that the correct printer is set as the default and not managed by Windows.
The printer prints its own test page but not from my computer. What does that prove?
It proves the printer, ink or toner, paper path and power are all fine. The break is between your computer and the printer - the driver, the port, the queue or the network path. Focus entirely on the computer side and skip any hardware troubleshooting.
Why will my inkjet not print after sitting unused for a month?
Ink dries in the nozzles when a printer sits idle, so pages come out blank or nothing feeds while the printer runs internal cleaning cycles. Run a nozzle check followed by one or two head cleanings, leaving 20 to 30 minutes between them. Printing a colour page weekly prevents it recurring.
