Smart Panel is the app Epson now ships with its printers. It puts the printer's own control panel on your phone, so you can run setup, join the printer to Wi-Fi, print, scan, copy, check ink levels and order supplies without touching the machine. It is particularly useful on EcoTank and small Expression models where the physical panel is limited or has no screen at all. Epson replaced Epson iPrint with it for new products, so if your printer is from roughly 2020 onwards this is the one to install.
Version and licence: Free. iOS version 5.4.1, about 174.2 MB, requires iOS 16 or later. This is the app to install for any recent Epson printer; the older Epson iPrint app is kept only for older hardware. About 174.2 MB on iOS.

What it does

How to install it
Step 1
Fill the tanks or install the cartridges and let the printer finish its initial ink charging, which can take several minutes.
Step 2
Install Epson Smart Panel from the App Store or Google Play.
Step 3
Connect the phone to the Wi-Fi network you want the printer on, using 2.4 GHz if your model does not support 5 GHz.
Step 4
Open the app and allow the local network permission when asked; discovery does not work without it.
Step 5
Tap the printer area and choose to set up a new printer, then follow the prompts, which may ask you to press the Wi-Fi button on the printer.
Step 6
Wait for the app to confirm the printer joined the network and shows a green or connected status.
Step 7
Print a test page from the app, then open Scan once so the scan connection is established.
Which printers it supports
Recent Epson consumer and small-office printers, including EcoTank ET models, Expression Home and Expression Photo, WorkForce and WorkForce Pro, and SureColor photo models such as the SC-P700 and P900. Older printers may only be supported by Epson iPrint.
When Epson Smart Panel will not work
Grant the local network permission in the phone settings, turn off any VPN, and check the phone is on the same band and subnet as the printer. Print a network status sheet from the printer to confirm it has an IP address at all.
Older Epson models were never added to Smart Panel. Install Epson iPrint instead, which Epson keeps for exactly this reason, or print through AirPrint or Mopria.
Move the printer next to the router for setup, and confirm the network is 2.4 GHz for models that do not support 5 GHz. Restore the printer's network settings from the panel or by holding the Wi-Fi button, then start again.
Large colour scans at high resolution can time out over a weak wireless link. Drop the resolution to 300 dpi, scan in greyscale for text, and move the printer closer to the router or use a wired connection.
EcoTank models estimate ink from usage counters, not from a sensor in the tank. After refilling you must confirm the refill on the printer panel or in the app so the counter resets, and you should still check the physical tank windows.

Frequently asked questions
Is Smart Panel replacing Epson iPrint?
For new printers, yes. Epson's own pages describe iPrint as being for older Epson products.
Do I need an Epson account?
Not for local printing and scanning. An account is only needed for Epson Connect services such as Email Print and Remote Print.
Can I use it without internet?
Yes for local printing and scanning on your own network. Cloud features and firmware updates need internet.
Is there a desktop version?
No. On Windows and macOS you use the model's driver plus utilities such as ScanSmart and Epson Software Updater.
