Label Editor is the design software for Epson's LabelWorks tape printers. It lays out labels at the exact tape width you have loaded, handles barcodes, symbols, frames and serialised numbering, and can pull data from a spreadsheet for batch printing. Epson ships different builds for Windows, macOS and mobile, and they are separate products rather than one cross-platform app, so features differ slightly. The important note for anyone searching old guides is that Epson iLabel, the previous mobile app, has been discontinued and removed from the app stores in favour of Epson Label Editor Mobile.

Version and licence: Free. Windows Label Editor is at V2.3, the Mac App Store version is a separate product at v1.1, and the mobile app is called Epson Label Editor Mobile at v1.7.1. The older Epson iLabel app has been discontinued and delisted, so do not go looking for it.

What it does

  • Layouts matched to the exact LabelWorks tape width loaded
  • Barcode and QR code generation
  • Serialised numbering for sequential labels
  • Mail-merge style import from a spreadsheet or CSV for batch runs
  • Symbol and frame libraries for cable, network and safety labelling
  • Cable wrap and flag layouts for network installers
  • Templates for common asset and shelf labels

How to install it

  1. Step 1

Load the tape cassette and switch the LabelWorks printer on before installing, so the software can read the tape width.

  2. Step 2

Open the LabelWorks downloads page and choose your platform.

  3. Step 3

On Windows download Label Editor V2.3 and run the installer; on macOS install Epson Label Editor from the Mac App Store; on a phone install Epson Label Editor Mobile.

  4. Step 4

Connect the printer by USB or Bluetooth depending on the model, and allow the pairing or driver prompt.

  5. Step 5

Open the software and select your printer model from the device list.

  6. Step 6

Confirm the tape width shown matches the cassette, then design the label.

  7. Step 7

Print one label as a test before running a batch, and check the margin setting since some models add a leading tape margin.

Which printers it supports

Epson LabelWorks LW series tape printers, including handheld and desktop models such as the LW-300, LW-600P, LW-PX series and LW-Z series industrial units.

When Epson Label Editor will not work

I cannot find Epson iLabel any more

It has been discontinued and delisted from the app stores. Install Epson Label Editor Mobile instead, which is Epson's current mobile label app.

The software does not see the printer

Over USB, install the driver offered on the LabelWorks downloads page before connecting. Over Bluetooth, pair the printer in the operating system first, then select it inside Label Editor. Some models need to be put into pairing mode with a button on the printer.

Labels print with a long blank leader

Most tape printers feed and cut a leading margin. Reduce the margin setting in the print options, and use the chain printing or continuous option when printing several labels so the leader is only added once.

Text is cut off at the tape edges

Confirm the tape width selected in the software matches the cassette exactly, since a 12 mm layout on 9 mm tape will clip. Reduce the font size or turn off any auto-fit that is stretching the text.

Barcodes will not scan

Use a wider tape, increase the barcode height and print in black on white or black on yellow tape, which scanners read best. Avoid clear tape for barcodes and check the quiet zone either side is preserved.

Can I import data from a spreadsheet?
