DYMO Connect Download and Setup Guide
DYMO's current label software for desktop and mobile

DYMO Connect is the current label software for DYMO's LabelWriter and LabelManager machines. It designs labels at the exact size of the loaded roll or tape, generates barcodes and QR codes, imports address data and prints from desktop or phone. The important compatibility point is that the LabelWriter 550 series only works with DYMO Connect, not with the older DYMO Label v8, because the 550 uses an authenticated label roll system that the old software does not understand. If you have a 550 or 5XL, this is the only option.
Version and licence: Free. DYMO Connect for Desktop is at version 1.6.1 and requires Windows 10 or later, or macOS 12 or later. This is the current software for the LabelWriter 550 and 5XL, which the older DYMO Label v8 does not support at all.

How to install it
Step 1
Check your printer model, since the LabelWriter 550 series requires DYMO Connect and will not work with the older software.
Step 2
Open the DYMO support page and download DYMO Connect for Desktop for Windows 10 or later, or macOS 12 or later.
Step 3
Run the installer as an administrator, or on macOS allow it in System Settings, Privacy and Security.
Step 4
Connect the label printer by USB and switch it on; the software should detect it and install the driver.
Step 5
Load a roll of genuine DYMO labels, since the 550 series checks the roll's authentication chip.
Step 6
Open DYMO Connect and confirm the loaded label size appears automatically.
Step 7
Design a label from a template and print one as a test.
Step 8
On a phone, install the DYMO app and pair over Bluetooth for supported mobile models.
Which printers it supports
DYMO LabelWriter printers including the 450 series, 550, 550 Turbo and 5XL, and LabelManager tape printers with computer connectivity.
When DYMO Connect will not work
The 550 series reads an authentication chip on the roll and rejects rolls without it. This is by design and cannot be bypassed, so the 550 requires genuine DYMO label rolls. If that matters to you, the older 450 series does not have the restriction.
DYMO Label v8 does not support the LabelWriter 550 series at all. Install DYMO Connect instead, which is the current software.
Connect by USB directly rather than through a hub, and let the driver install fully. On macOS grant the app the permissions it requests, and check the printer appears in Printers and Scanners.
Confirm the label size shown in the software matches the loaded roll, and run the alignment or calibration function. A roll that is not seated correctly in the guides also causes drift.
These are direct thermal printers, so a faint print usually means old or non-thermal labels, or a dirty print head. Clean the head with the supplied cleaning card or an alcohol swab when the printer is cold.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need DYMO Connect or DYMO Label?
DYMO Connect for anything current, and it is mandatory for the LabelWriter 550 series. DYMO Label v8 is legacy and does not support the 550.
Does the 550 really require genuine labels?
Yes. It reads an authentication chip on the roll, and rolls without one are rejected.
Is there a mobile version?
Yes, for iOS and Android, which pairs over Bluetooth with supported mobile label printers.
