Where to buy in Australia, how to get a printer onto a Telstra Smart Modem or Optus NBN box, what repairs cost in AUD, and where to recycle cartridges free.
Australia has the most expensive printer ink in the developed world, an NBN rollout that put a band-steering modem in most homes, and a retail landscape dominated by three chains. All three facts shape how you should buy, set up and support a printer here. This page covers what is specific to Australia.
Almost every home printer sold in 2026 has a 2.4 GHz-only Wi-Fi radio, and every major Australian gateway ships with band steering enabled, broadcasting one network name across 2.4 and 5 GHz. The printer cannot find a network it can join, or joins and then becomes invisible to phones sitting on 5 GHz.
Telstra Smart Modems merge both bands under one name and do not expose a band-split option in the Telstra app on all firmware versions. Sign in to the modem's admin page at its local address, open Wi-Fi settings, and give the 2.4 GHz band a separate network name, or turn off the combined-band option. Complete the printer setup, then revert if you want. If you use Telstra Smart Wi-Fi Boosters, join the printer to the main modem rather than a booster.
Optus modems also default to a merged SSID. Access the modem admin page and split the bands under Wireless settings. The Optus Ultra WiFi Modem and its mesh boosters can isolate devices; put the printer on the main unit during setup.
These providers typically ship TP-Link, Archer or similar retail-grade routers. Most expose separate 2.4 and 5 GHz network names in the standard web interface under Wireless. Aussie Broadband customers often use their own router, which makes this easier: simply name the bands separately.
Both use single-SSID defaults on their supplied modems, configurable through the router web interface. Belong hardware is rebadged Telstra equipment and behaves the same way.
If the modem will not cooperate, create a 2.4 GHz-only hotspot on a phone, join the printer to it, then use the printer's panel or the vendor app to move it onto the home network with the correct credentials. Step-by-step instructions are in printer Wi-Fi setup on Australian routers and printer will not connect to Wi-Fi.
These are the official Australian support sites. Use them rather than any number that appears in a sponsored search result.
We are an independent support site and are not affiliated with any manufacturer. Our brand pages, starting with HP, collect the fixes we use most often.
Australians usually search for "printer repairs" rather than "printer repair", and the trade is concentrated in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth, Adelaide and Canberra. Most workshops focus on business machines; many now decline consumer inkjets outright because parts cost more than a replacement.
For in-home setup, the two usual routes are Geeks2U, which operates nationally and charges roughly AUD 120 to AUD 250 depending on the job and time of day, and Airtasker, where local technicians bid on printer setup jobs, typically in the AUD 60 to AUD 150 range. Officeworks also offers setup assistance on machines bought in store.
| Job | Typical Australian cost |
|---|---|
| Workshop diagnostic | AUD 80-150 |
| In-home technician callout | AUD 120-250 |
| Roller and pickup assembly replacement | AUD 180-320 |
| Fuser replacement (laser) | AUD 300-600 |
| Printhead replacement (where supported) | AUD 250-500 |
| Waste ink pad service | AUD 150-280 |
On a home printer the numbers rarely justify a repair. Where they do is business lasers, workgroup multifunction devices and professional photo printers. See is it worth repairing a printer.
Worth knowing: under Australian Consumer Law, goods must be of acceptable quality and fit for purpose, and the consumer guarantee applies for a reasonable period regardless of any expired manufacturer warranty. For a printer costing several hundred dollars, a reasonable period is generally longer than twelve months, and the claim is against the retailer, not the manufacturer.
Before recycling any networked printer, clear its stored Wi-Fi credentials, address book and saved scan destinations. Office multifunction devices often hold scanned images on an internal drive. Our guide to printer security basics covers wiping a device before disposal.
Australian support enquiries cluster around five issues, and none of them needs a technician on site.
Three Australian specifics matter. Heat and dust are hard on inkjets: a printer in an uninsulated study or garage that regularly passes 35 degrees will suffer more nozzle blockages and faster ink degradation than the same machine indoors. Dust in regional and rural areas is worse again, so keep the paper tray covered and the lid closed. Second, mesh Wi-Fi through Telstra Smart Wi-Fi Boosters and Optus mesh units steers devices aggressively between bands and nodes, so a printer that works in one room and not another is nearly always being pushed onto a band it cannot use. Third, running an inkjet on a phone hotspot, which is common on Starlink and fixed wireless connections in regional Australia, requires the hotspot to be set to 2.4 GHz before the printer will see it at all.
Nearly every printer problem we see in Australia is a modem setting, a driver issue or a stuck print queue, and none of those needs a technician in your house. A remote session usually resolves it in one sitting and costs a fraction of a callout. If you would like somebody to take it over, you can get help from a printer specialist. If you would rather do it yourself, start with printer offline or browse our error code reference for the exact message on your screen.

The Smart Modem broadcasts one network name across both 2.4 and 5 GHz, and almost all home printers are 2.4 GHz only. Sign in to the modem's admin page, open Wi-Fi settings and give the 2.4 GHz band its own network name, or disable the combined-band option. Join the printer to the main modem rather than a Smart Wi-Fi Booster.
Typically AUD 120 to AUD 250 for an in-home visit depending on the job and time of day. Airtasker technicians usually bid in the AUD 60 to AUD 150 range. For a wireless or driver problem, a remote session is normally cheaper and just as effective, since the fault is almost always a modem setting.
A workshop diagnostic runs AUD 80 to AUD 150 before parts, roller replacement AUD 180 to AUD 320 and a laser fuser AUD 300 to AUD 600. For a home printer under AUD 500 that usually means replacing rather than repairing, though business lasers and photo printers are often worth fixing.
Cartridges 4 Planet Ark provides free collection boxes at Officeworks, Australia Post outlets, JB Hi-Fi and Harvey Norman, accepting cartridges from all major brands. Officeworks also accepts whole printers through its Bring It Back programme, and most councils run free e-waste drop-off.
Epson launched the print-only EcoTank ET-1910 at AUD 299 in May 2026, and the ET-2910 in white and ET-2911 in black at AUD 399. The ET-4900, which adds an automatic document feeder, fax and Ethernet, sits about AUD 20 above the equivalent ET-2920 pricing.
Possibly. Australian Consumer Law guarantees that goods are of acceptable quality and durable for a reasonable period, which for a several-hundred-dollar printer is generally longer than a twelve-month warranty. The claim is made against the retailer that sold it, not the manufacturer.
