Light home use where Instant Ink convenience outweighs cartridge freedom
Where to buy in Canada, how to get a printer onto Rogers Ignite, Bell Giga Hub or Telus Wi-Fi, what repair costs in Canadian dollars, and how to recycle responsibly.
Printers in Canada cost more, ink costs more again, and the ISP gateways used by Rogers, Bell and Telus all share the one setting that stops printers connecting. This page covers what is specific to setting up, supporting, repairing and disposing of a printer in Canada, in both official languages where it matters.
Nearly every home printer sold in 2026 has a 2.4 GHz-only Wi-Fi radio. Every major Canadian ISP gateway ships with band steering enabled, broadcasting a single network name across 2.4 and 5 GHz. During setup the printer cannot see a 2.4 GHz network to join, or it joins and then becomes invisible to phones and laptops sitting on 5 GHz.
Ignite gateways merge bands by default. Open the Ignite HomeConnect app, go to WiFi, select your network, and use Edit to separate the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz names, or disable band steering. Complete the printer setup, then merge them again if you prefer. Also check that Ignite Advanced Security is not blocking device-to-device traffic; it occasionally interferes with printer discovery and AirPrint.
The Giga Hub uses one SSID across both bands. Sign in to the gateway's admin page at its local address, go to Wi-Fi, and either create a separate 2.4 GHz network name or turn off the combined-band option. On the Home Hub 3000 and 4000, the two bands can be named separately under Wi-Fi settings. Bell's Whole Home Wi-Fi pods can also isolate devices; join the printer to the main hub rather than a pod during setup.
Telus gateways default to a merged SSID. Use the My Telus app or the gateway admin page to split the bands or disable Smart Steering during setup. Telus Boost Wi-Fi extenders should be temporarily bypassed while the printer is joining.
Shaw's BlueCurve gateways behave like Rogers Ignite, since they share the platform. Videotron's Helix gateway also merges bands and is configured through the Helix app. Smaller providers usually expose separate band names in the standard router web interface.
If the app route fails, create a 2.4 GHz-only hotspot from a phone, join the printer to it, then use the printer's panel or the vendor app to move it to the home network. Detailed steps are in printer Wi-Fi setup on Canadian routers and printer will not connect to Wi-Fi.
These are the official Canadian support sites. Use them rather than any phone number that appears in a sponsored search result.
We are an independent support site and are not affiliated with any manufacturer. Our brand pages, starting with HP, collect the fixes we use most often.
All four major manufacturers provide French-language support sites and bilingual telephone support in Canada, and consumer protection rules in Quebec require French documentation for products sold there. If you are buying in Quebec, confirm before purchase that the printer's control panel language and the bundled software support French. Most current models do; some imported or grey-market units bought through marketplace sellers do not, and the driver package may be English-only. Canadian retail packaging is bilingual, which is a useful check that you are buying a Canadian-market unit with valid Canadian warranty coverage.
Independent printer repair is concentrated in Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton and Ottawa, with much thinner coverage elsewhere. Most shops focus on business machines rather than home printers, and several will decline consumer inkjets outright.
| Job | Typical Canadian cost |
|---|---|
| Shop diagnostic / bench fee | CAD 90-160 |
| Roller and pickup assembly replacement | CAD 160-280 |
| Fuser replacement (laser) | CAD 260-500 |
| Printhead replacement (where supported) | CAD 200-450 |
| Waste ink pad / absorber service | CAD 130-260 |
| On-site business service call | CAD 150-300 plus parts |
Best Buy Canada offers Geek Squad setup services, and Staples Canada provides in-store and remote setup for machines bought there. For a home printer, the economics rarely favour repair: a CAD 300 fix on a CAD 300 printer is not a decision, it is a replacement. Repair is worth it for business lasers, workgroup multifunction devices and professional photo printers. See is it worth repairing a printer.
Electronics recycling in Canada is run provincially under extended producer responsibility rules, and most provinces prohibit putting electronics in household waste.
Before recycling any networked printer, clear its stored Wi-Fi credentials, address book and saved scan destinations. Business multifunction devices often store scanned images on an internal drive. Our guide to printer security basics covers wiping a device before disposal.
Canadian support tickets cluster around five issues, and none of them needs a technician in your home.
Two Canadian specifics matter. Winter indoor air is exceptionally dry across most of the country, and dry air accelerates printhead clogging on inkjets and ink tank printers; a machine that behaves all summer can block up in January. Print a colour page every week through the heating season and run a nozzle check monthly. Second, mesh Wi-Fi is now standard in Canadian homes through Rogers Ignite pods, Bell Whole Home Wi-Fi and Telus Boost. Mesh nodes steer devices aggressively between bands and access points, so a printer that works in one room and not another is almost certainly being moved onto a band or node it cannot use. Ethernet or a dedicated 2.4 GHz network name solves it permanently.
Almost every Canadian printer problem we see is a router setting, a driver issue or a queue problem, and all three are fixable remotely without waiting for a technician or driving to a shop. If you want somebody to take it over, you can get help from a printer specialist. If you would rather work through it yourself, start with printer offline for the most common symptom, or browse our error code reference for a specific message.

Rogers Ignite gateways broadcast one network name across both 2.4 and 5 GHz, and almost all home printers are 2.4 GHz only. Open the Ignite HomeConnect app, edit your WiFi settings to separate the 2.4 and 5 GHz names or disable band steering, complete the printer setup, then merge them again if you prefer.
Sign in to the Giga Hub admin page at its local address, open Wi-Fi settings, and either create a separate 2.4 GHz network name or turn off the combined-band option. Join the printer during setup to the main hub rather than a Whole Home Wi-Fi pod, since pods can isolate devices.
Expect a shop diagnostic of CAD 90 to CAD 160 before parts, roller replacement at CAD 160 to CAD 280, and a laser fuser at CAD 260 to CAD 500. On-site business calls start around CAD 150. For home printers costing under CAD 400, repair is almost never economical.
EPRA operates free regulated drop-off depots in most provinces. Staples Canada accepts printers and cartridges free in store, and Best Buy Canada runs a free in-store recycling program. Manufacturer schemes including HP Planet Partners provide free prepaid return labels for used cartridges.
Canadian-market printers ship with bilingual packaging, French control panel options and French documentation, and all four major manufacturers offer French-language support sites and bilingual phone support. Grey-market units imported from the US often do not, and Canadian warranty service may be refused on them.
The sticker price is usually lower, but Canadian warranty service can be refused on US-market units, French documentation is absent, and you still pay Canadian prices for ink and toner. For a machine you expect to keep for years, buying from a Canadian retailer is the safer choice.
