Connecting a Printer to Rogers Ignite, Bell, Telus and Shaw Wi-Fi (Canada Guide)
Canadian gateways are app-managed and steer devices between bands automatically. Most printers are 2.4GHz-only, which is why they vanish from the network.

In Canadian homes, the gateway is usually the reason a printer will not connect. Rogers Ignite, Bell Giga Hub and Home Hub, Telus Wi-Fi Hub and Shaw BlueCurve all broadcast one Wi-Fi name across both bands and decide which band each device uses. Almost every home printer has a 2.4GHz radio only, so it can end up unable to see or hold a connection. The fixes are in the ISP app rather than a router page, which is what makes them hard to find.
Quick fixes first
- Set the printer up within a couple of metres of the gateway, then move it back afterwards.
- Confirm the Wi-Fi name and password. They are on the gateway label unless someone changed them in the app.
- Make sure the device you are setting up from is on the main network, not a guest or IoT network.
- Turn off any VPN while you set up.
- Use the printer's own Wireless Setup Wizard from its panel if it has a screen.
- If the printer's scan does not list your network, split or prioritise the 2.4GHz band using the app steps below.
Why this happens on Canadian gateways
Band steering pushes capable devices onto 5GHz for speed. Printers are the exception that breaks it: they use 2.4GHz only, sleep deeply, and reconnect rarely, so the gateway's logic can treat them as absent. Add Wi-Fi pods, which Rogers and Shaw supply widely, and the printer can be handed between nodes it cannot reliably follow.
The three symptoms are consistent:
- The network never appears in the printer's scan list.
- The printer joins successfully, then goes offline days later.
- Everything says connected but no device can find the printer.

Rogers Ignite WiFi Gateway
Ignite gateways are managed through the Ignite HomeConnect app, and the local admin page offers only a subset of settings.
- Open the Ignite HomeConnect app and sign in.
- Go to WiFi and open your network's settings.
- Look for the option to separate or customise the bands. Where available, give the 2.4GHz band its own name.
- Save, wait for the gateway to apply the change, then join the printer to the 2.4GHz name.
- Back in the app, find the printer in the connected devices list and set a reserved IP for it.
If the app does not offer a band split on your gateway generation, do the setup close to the gateway. A 2.4GHz-only device usually connects fine at short range even with steering active.
The local admin page at 192.168.0.1 is worth trying, using the credentials on the gateway label, but expect Rogers to have moved most controls into the app.
Shaw BlueCurve
Shaw BlueCurve runs on the same platform as Rogers Ignite following the merger, so the steps are near identical. Use the BlueCurve Home app, open the Wi-Fi network settings, look for band options, and set a reserved IP for the printer in the connected devices list. Where the app offers no band split, set up close to the gateway.
Bell Giga Hub and Home Hub 3000/4000
Bell hubs are configured through the Bell Wi-Fi app or a local page.
- Try the local page at
192.168.2.1, signing in with the admin password printed on the hub. - Open the Wi-Fi settings. On Home Hub 3000 and 4000, the 2.4GHz and 5GHz networks can generally be configured separately.
- Give the 2.4GHz network a distinct name and save.
- Join the printer to that name.
- In the connected devices list, reserve the printer's IP address.
On the Giga Hub, more of the configuration lives in the Bell Wi-Fi app, including pod management. If you use Bell Wi-Fi pods, set the printer up in the same room as the main hub.
Telus Wi-Fi Hub
Telus manages its Wi-Fi Hub through the My Telus app and Telus Wi-Fi controls, with a local page also available on some models.
- Open the Telus app and go to your Wi-Fi network settings.
- Look for band or advanced Wi-Fi options and give the 2.4GHz band its own name if the option exists.
- If not, try the local admin page using the address printed on the hub label.
- Set the printer up near the hub, then reserve its IP address in the connected devices list.
Telus boosters behave like other mesh nodes: convenient for phones, less predictable for a 2.4GHz-only printer at the far end of the house.

Addresses and menu names change with firmware. The label on the gateway prints the correct address and password for your unit.
Reserve the address
A printer that worked and then went offline has almost always been given a different IP address. Fix it once and the problem stops recurring.
- Print the printer's network configuration page from its panel and note the IP and MAC address.
- In the ISP app's connected devices list, find the printer and choose the option to reserve or fix its IP address.
- If the app offers no reservation, set a static IP on the printer under Network › TCP/IP › Manual, using an address outside the gateway's DHCP pool with the same subnet mask and gateway.
- If you changed the address after adding the printer on your computers, remove and re-add it there.

Guest and IoT networks
All four providers offer a guest network, and several also create a separate network for smart-home devices. Both isolate clients from each other, which means:
- A printer joined to the guest or IoT network is invisible to your laptop and phone.
- A laptop on guest Wi-Fi cannot see a printer on the main network.
- Some app-driven setups put new devices on the IoT network automatically, which catches people out.
Check which network each device is actually on in the app's connected devices list before troubleshooting anything else. If the printer is on the wrong one, remove it from the network in the app and set it up again from the printer's own panel.
WPS on Canadian gateways
WPS push-button setup is the quickest route on a printer with no screen, but availability varies. Rogers and Shaw gateways have generally moved away from an exposed WPS button, while Bell and Telus units and third-party routers often still have one, sometimes combined with another button on the rear.
- Start WPS Push Button mode on the printer, from its wireless menu or by holding the Wi-Fi button until the light flashes.
- Press the gateway's WPS button within two minutes.
- Wait for the printer's Wi-Fi light to go solid, then print a network configuration page to confirm.
If your gateway has no WPS button, do not go looking for a way to enable it. Use the printer's own setup wizard, or the manufacturer's app, which hands the Wi-Fi credentials to the printer from your phone.
Winter, basements and 2.4GHz
A practical note for Canadian homes: gateways are often installed in a basement near the service entry, and printers frequently live two floors up. 2.4GHz travels better through floors than 5GHz, which is in the printer's favour, but concrete basements and older wiring still attenuate heavily. If the printer's signal strength on its network configuration page is poor, no amount of gateway configuration will make it stable. Move the printer, move the gateway, add a pod near the printer, or use Ethernet.
If nothing worked
Test the printer's own radio: enable Wi-Fi Direct on the printer and connect a phone directly to it. If that works, the printer is fine and the gateway or its settings are the problem. If the printer cannot create its own network either, the wireless module has failed.

On a printer that cost under 250 Canadian dollars, replacement is usually the better answer, especially since a current model with an Ethernet port removes the whole problem. Why does my printer go offline every few days?
The gateway has given it a different IP address, so your computer's print queue points at nothing. Reserve the printer's IP in the ISP app's connected devices list, or set a static address on the printer outside the gateway's DHCP pool.
Do Wi-Fi pods cause printer problems?
They can. Pods keep one network name and hand devices between nodes, which suits phones but can leave a 2.4GHz-only printer connecting to a distant pod and dropping. Set the printer up near the main gateway and keep it in a room the gateway covers well.
My devices say connected but cannot find the printer. Why?
Usually the printer or the device is on a guest or IoT network, which isolates clients from each other by design. Check the connected devices list in your ISP app and make sure everything sits on the main network.
