Brother Mobile Connect is the app Brother now ships with its printers. It handles first-time wireless setup, printing photos and documents from the phone, scanning from an all-in-one, checking toner or ink levels and ordering supplies. It also surfaces the printer's own settings, so you can change things like sleep timers and tray defaults without walking to the machine. It replaced the mobile edition of Brother iPrint and Scan, though the desktop edition of iPrint and Scan is still current and separate.

What it does

How to install it
Step 1
Unbox the printer, remove the shipping tape, install the toner or ink and let it complete its start-up routine.
Step 2
Install Brother Mobile Connect from the App Store or Google Play.
Step 3
Connect the phone to the Wi-Fi network the printer will use, on 2.4 GHz if the model does not support 5 GHz.
Step 4
Open the app, accept the local network permission, and choose to add a printer.
Step 5
Follow the setup prompts, which typically ask you to select the printer's own temporary network or press a button on the printer panel.
Step 6
Enter your Wi-Fi password when asked so the app can pass it to the printer.
Step 7
Wait for the confirmation that the printer joined the network, then print a test page.
Step 8
Open Scan once so the app registers the scan path on an all-in-one.
Which printers it supports
Current Brother inkjet and laser printers and all-in-ones, including the DCP, MFC and HL ranges, INKvestment Tank models and many business laser MFPs. Older machines may only be supported by Brother iPrint and Scan.
When Brother Mobile Connect will not work
Grant the local network permission in the phone settings, disable any VPN, and confirm the phone is on the same band and subnet. Print a Network Configuration report from the printer panel under Reports or Machine Info to check it has an IP address.
Move the printer next to the router, and use the 2.4 GHz network if your model has no 5 GHz radio. Reset the printer's network settings from Menu, Network, Network Reset, then start setup again from the app.
Scan only appears on all-in-one models and only when the printer is registered over the network. Re-add the printer over Wi-Fi rather than a direct connection, and confirm scanning from mobile is enabled in the printer's web interface.
Brother lasers estimate toner from page counts rather than measuring it, so the reading is approximate. A cartridge showing empty will often print more pages; check whether your model has a continue mode in the panel settings under Toner or Replace Toner.
Large photo jobs are rendered on the phone and sent as bitmaps. Reduce the print quality for drafts, move closer to the router, or connect the printer by Ethernet, which removes wireless variability entirely.

Is Mobile Connect replacing Brother iPrint and Scan?
On mobile, yes. The desktop version of iPrint and Scan remains current and is a separate product.
Do I need a Brother account?
Not for local printing and scanning. An account is only needed for supplies subscriptions and some cloud services.
Will it work with my older Brother printer?
Many older models are supported, but if yours is not listed, install Brother iPrint and Scan or print through AirPrint or Mopria.
