The Mopria Print Service is the cross-brand printing plugin for Android, developed by an alliance that includes most of the major printer manufacturers. It adds certified printers to the Android system print dialog so you can print from any app without a brand-specific application. Most Android phones already ship with a Mopria-powered service built in, but the standalone app is useful where the built-in one is missing or out of date. A separate Mopria Scan app handles scanning from certified all-in-ones.

Version and licence: Free. The correct page is mopria.org/print-from-android; note that the older address mopria.org/mopria-print-service now returns a 404. There is also a separate Mopria Scan app for scanning from certified all-in-ones.

What it does

  • Adds certified printers from any brand to the Android print dialog
  • Automatic discovery of network printers, with Wi-Fi Direct support
  • Paper size, duplex, colour and copies options
  • Separate Mopria Scan app for scanning from certified all-in-ones
  • Certified product list published by the Mopria Alliance
  • Works without any manufacturer app or account
  • Supported by most major printer manufacturers

How to install it

  1. Step 1

Check first whether your phone already has a Mopria-powered print service under Settings, Connected devices, Connection preferences, Printing.

  2. Step 2

If it is missing or outdated, install the Mopria Print Service from Google Play through the Mopria print-from-Android page.

  3. Step 3

Open the printing settings and switch the Mopria service on.

  4. Step 4

Grant the location or nearby-devices permission, which Android needs before the service can find printers.

  5. Step 5

Connect the phone to the same network as the printer.

  6. Step 6

Open a document, choose Print from the share menu and select your printer.

  7. Step 7

Install Mopria Scan separately if you also want to scan from a certified all-in-one.

  8. Step 8

Check your printer on the Mopria certified product list if it does not appear.

Which printers it supports

Mopria-certified printers from most major manufacturers, including HP, Canon, Epson, Brother, Lexmark, Xerox, Ricoh, Kyocera, Sharp, Toshiba and Konica Minolta. The alliance publishes a certified product list.

When Mopria Print Service will not work

mopria.org/mopria-print-service does not load

That address returns a 404. Use mopria.org/print-from-android, which is the current page with the app links and setup instructions.

No printers are found

Grant the location or nearby-devices permission, since Android blocks network discovery without it. Then confirm the phone is on the same network and that your printer is Mopria certified by checking the certified product list.

Duplicate printers appear

You have both Mopria and a manufacturer plugin enabled, and both are offering the same printer. Disable one in the Android printing settings.

Scanning is not available

The print service does not scan. Install the separate Mopria Scan app, and confirm the all-in-one is certified for scanning as well as printing.

Advanced options are missing

Mopria exposes a common feature set across brands. For stapling, secure release or accounting codes, use the manufacturer's own plugin or app.
