The imageCLASS MF289dw is the fax-equipped flagship of the mono laser all-in-ones Canon USA introduced in September 2024 at $299.99, and it most likely replaces the MF269dw. It prints, scans, copies and faxes, with a duplex automatic document feeder for two-sided originals. Canon launched two siblings at the same time: the MF287dw, which also has fax, and the cheaper MF284dw at $229.99, which drops fax and keeps print, scan and copy. The range reached India in December 2024 and Canada in February 2025. It suits small offices and busy home offices that print mostly black text and still send and receive faxes.

Setting up the Canon imageCLASS MF289dw

Remove all orange tape and packing from the toner cartridge before switching on. Connect Ethernet, or join Wi-Fi from the control panel; the Canon PRINT Business app can also scan straight to a phone. Install the full MF driver and scanner package from Canon's support site so the feeder scans into MF Scan Utility on Windows. Set the fax header, date and receive mode in the fax settings before sending the first fax. Check the toner cartridge number printed on the installed cartridge before ordering spares.

1. Unbox and prepare. Remove every piece of shipping tape and packing material, install the toner cartridge and drum unit, and load paper in the tray.
2. Join your Wi-Fi. Keep the printer close to the router for setup. Most printers only connect to the 2.4GHz band, so if your router broadcasts one merged network name you may need to split the bands temporarily. See our Wi-Fi guide if it will not join.
3. Install the setup app. Use Canon's official app rather than a driver you found on a search result — third-party driver sites are the most common source of printer malware.
4. Add the printer. On Windows 11: Settings › Bluetooth & devices › Printers & scanners › Add device. On macOS: System Settings › Printers & Scanners › Add Printer.
5. Print a test page and run a scan if this is an all-in-one, so you find any problem now rather than when you are in a hurry.
