Generic Plus is Canon's answer to a universal driver: one package that drives a wide range of Canon laser printers and multifunction devices rather than a separate driver per model. It comes in three flavours, UFR II for Canon's own fast page description language, PCL6 for mixed fleets and PostScript 3 for graphics workflows. Administrators like it because a single driver on a print server covers many devices and configuration can be exported and reused. There is a real security reason to keep it current, as version 3.31 addressed three published vulnerabilities.
Version and licence: Windows Generic Plus UFR II is at version 3.40, about 39.58 MB, for Windows 10 and 11 on x64. macOS uses the separate UFR II / UFRII LT driver in the 10.19 range, and Linux uses UFR II version 6.40. Version 3.31 fixed the security issues tracked as CVE-2025-7698, CVE-2025-9903 and CVE-2025-9904, so anything older than that should be updated. About 39.58 MB for the Windows UFR II package.

How to install it
Step 1
Choose the edition: UFR II for best performance on Canon hardware, PCL6 for mixed fleets, PostScript for graphics work.
Step 2
Download the current package from the Canon support site by searching your model, and confirm the version is at least 3.31 for the security fixes.
Step 3
Extract the archive to a local folder. Do not run the installer from inside the zip.
Step 4
Run the setup application as an administrator and accept the licence.
Step 5
Choose Standard to search the network for devices, or Custom to type the printer's IP address directly.
Step 6
Let the installer query the device so its trays and finishers are detected. If detection fails, open Printer Properties, Device Settings and set them manually.
Step 7
Set your defaults in Printing Preferences, particularly duplex and black and white, then print a test page.
Which printers it supports
Canon laser and multifunction devices in the imageCLASS, i-SENSYS, imageRUNNER, imageRUNNER ADVANCE and imageFORCE families. Inkjet models such as PIXMA and MAXIFY are not covered and use their own drivers.
When Canon Generic Plus Printer Driver will not work
Network discovery is often blocked between subnets. Use the Custom install path and enter the printer's IP address or hostname directly, creating a standard TCP/IP port.
The driver could not query the device. Allow SNMP traffic to the printer, or set the installed options manually in Printer Properties, Device Settings, matching what is physically fitted.
Many Canon MFPs require a department ID and PIN. Open Printing Preferences, find the department ID or user management section, enter the credentials your administrator issued, and save them as the default.
It does. Version 3.31 fixed three published vulnerabilities. Uninstall the old driver from Print Server Properties, Drivers, then install the current package and recreate the queues.
That is expected. macOS uses the separate UFR II or UFRII LT driver, currently in the 10.19 range, downloaded from the model's support page. Linux uses UFR II version 6.40.

UFR II is fastest on Canon hardware because rendering is shared with the host. PCL6 suits mixed-brand fleets, and PostScript suits design and prepress workflows.
Do I need to update if my printing works fine?
Yes, if you are below version 3.31. That release fixed three published security vulnerabilities in the driver.
Will it work with my PIXMA?
No. Generic Plus is for Canon laser and multifunction devices. Inkjets are set up through ij.start.canon.
