The IJ Printer Assistant Tool is where the maintenance functions for a Canon inkjet live on Windows: print head cleaning, deep cleaning, nozzle check patterns, print head alignment, ink level display, quiet mode and the power on and off timers. Older Canon drivers put these on a Maintenance tab inside Printer Properties, and newer ones move them into this separate tool. It is usually installed automatically with the driver, and Canon also publishes it as a small standalone download for cases where it is missing.

How to install it
Step 1
Check first whether it is already installed by opening the Start menu and typing Canon IJ Printer Assistant Tool.
Step 2
If it is missing, install the full driver package for your model from ij.start.canon, which normally includes it.
Step 3
If you specifically need the standalone installer, download it from the Canon support page for the tool.
Step 4
Run the installer with an administrator account and accept the licence.
Step 5
Open the tool and select your printer from the drop-down at the top if more than one is installed.
Step 6
Run a Nozzle Check first so you have a before picture, then Cleaning if the pattern shows gaps.
Step 7
Re-run the nozzle check after cleaning, and only escalate to Deep Cleaning if gaps remain.
Which printers it supports
Canon inkjet printers on Windows, including PIXMA TS, TR and TC models, PIXMA G MegaTank models and MAXIFY office inkjets. It is not used by Canon laser printers.
When Canon IJ Printer Assistant Tool will not work
It ships with the driver package, so reinstall the full package from ij.start.canon rather than only the basic driver. Canon also publishes a small standalone installer on its support site if the package still omits it.
The tool talks to the installed queue, so the printer must already appear in Windows Printers and scanners and be online. Remove stale duplicate queues, keep the one pointing at the printer's IP address, then reopen the tool.
Run at most two cleaning cycles and one deep clean in a session, then leave the printer switched on for a few hours so ink can rewet the head. Repeated cleaning wastes a large amount of ink and can make matters worse. If the pattern still has whole missing colours, the head or the cartridge may have failed.
Most maintenance functions are unavailable while a job is printing or when the printer reports an error, and some are disabled when the printer is shared over a network rather than connected directly. Clear the queue, resolve any panel error, and run the tool on the machine that hosts the printer.
MegaTank models do not report exact levels because they use refillable tanks, so the display is an estimate at best. For cartridge models, level reporting stops when a third-party or refilled cartridge is fitted.

Yes. On macOS the same maintenance functions are reached from Printers and Scanners by opening the print queue and choosing Printer Settings or the utility.
Does it come with the driver?
Normally yes. Canon publishes a standalone installer as well for cases where the driver package did not install it.
How often should I run head cleaning?
Only when a nozzle check shows gaps. Cleaning consumes ink from the cartridges, so routine preventive cleaning is a waste.
