Printer Driver Installation Failed or Rolled Back? How to Install It Cleanly on Windows 11 and macOS
Driver installs usually fail because a previous driver package is still registered, the download does not match your OS build, or the installer is not running with administrator rights.
On this page
When a printer driver installer hangs, errors out or rolls back at the last moment, the cause is nearly always one of three things: a previous driver package for the same model is still registered and locked by the Print Spooler, the download does not match your operating system, or the installer lacks the privileges it needs. The fix is a proper clean removal followed by the correct package - not another install over the top.
Quick fixes first
- Remove the printer at Settings › Bluetooth & devices › Printers & scanners, then uninstall the vendor software under Settings › Apps › Installed apps.
- Press Win+R, run
printui /s /t2, and remove the leftover driver and package for your model. - Reboot. This is not optional - the Print Spooler holds file locks until it restarts.
- Download the full driver and software package for your exact model number and Windows 11 from the manufacturer's own site.
- Right-click the installer and choose Run as administrator, with antivirus paused.

Why this happens
Windows keeps printer drivers in a driver store separate from the printers themselves. Removing a printer from Settings deletes the queue but leaves the package behind, still registered and still loaded by the Print Spooler process. When a new installer tries to register a package with the same name, Windows refuses to overwrite the in-use files, the installer cannot complete its final registration step, and it undoes everything it did - the rollback you see.
The second cause is a mismatched download. Manufacturers publish separate packages per operating system, per architecture and often per region. A driver for Windows 10 may install on Windows 11 and then fail to work; a US-region package may refuse to recognise a model with a UK or Australian suffix. Since Windows 10 support ended on 14 October 2025, some vendors have also stopped publishing new builds for it entirely.
Third: permissions and interference. Printer installers write into C:\Windows\System32\spool\drivers, add services, and register port monitors. Third-party antivirus suites frequently block one of those steps without a visible warning, and the installer reports a generic failure.
Fix 1: Remove everything, in the right order
Order matters more than any individual step here.
- Remove the device. Settings › Bluetooth & devices › Printers & scanners › select the printer › Remove device. Do this for every duplicate entry too.
- Uninstall the software. Settings › Apps › Installed apps. Remove every entry naming the manufacturer and printer - drivers, scan utilities, update assistants and toolbars.
- Remove the driver package. Win+R,
printui /s /t2, Drivers tab, select the model, Remove, and choose Remove driver and driver package. If Windows says the driver is in use, openservices.msc, stop the Print Spooler, do the removal, then start the spooler again. - Check Print Management if you have it. On Windows 11 Pro, run
printmanagement.mscand check All Drivers and All Ports for orphaned entries. Home editions do not include this tool. - Reboot. Then install.
Fix 2: Get the right package
Go to the manufacturer's support site and search your exact model number, including any letter suffix. Then:
- Select Windows 11 as the operating system, and 64-bit unless you are on an Arm device, in which case look for an Arm64 build.
- Choose the full or complete package rather than the basic driver. The basic driver prints but does not scan, which is the single most common reason people find their all-in-one's scanner missing later - see scanner not working.
- Check the file size. A basic driver is a few tens of megabytes; a full package is usually several hundred. A suspiciously small download is a web installer that will fail without internet access to the vendor's servers.
- If the download is interrupted or your browser flags it, download it again rather than running a partial file. Corrupt downloads produce exactly the same rollback symptom.

Fix 3: Give the installer what it needs
- Run as administrator. Right-click the downloaded file and choose Run as administrator, even if your account is already an admin. It changes how the installer requests elevation.
- Pause antivirus. Suspend real-time protection for the install, then re-enable it immediately afterwards. Windows Defender rarely interferes; third-party suites frequently do.
- Close everything. Open Office applications and browsers can hold the spooler busy.
- Do not connect USB until asked. If you plug a USB printer in before the installer requests it, Windows detects it first and installs its own generic driver, which then blocks the vendor package. If that has already happened, unplug, remove the device and driver package, and start again.
- Check disk space and the temp folder. Installers unpack to
%TEMP%; a full disk or a locked temp folder causes silent failures.
Fix 4: Install manually when the installer will not co-operate
You can add a printer without running the vendor installer at all.
- Go to Settings › Bluetooth & devices › Printers & scanners › Add device.
- Click Add manually when it appears.
- Choose Add a printer using an IP address or hostname, set the device type to TCP/IP Device, and enter the printer's IP address from its network configuration page.
- When prompted for a driver, click Have Disk and browse to the .INF file inside the extracted driver folder, or pick the model from the Windows list.
Most vendor packages are self-extracting archives. Run the installer, let it unpack, then cancel it - the extracted files usually remain in a folder under C:\ or your temp directory, and the .INF inside is all Windows needs. Further options in can't add a printer in Windows.
Fix 5: Use driverless printing instead
From July 2026, new Windows 11 installations default to Windows Ready Print, which prints over Mopria and IPP with no vendor driver at all. If your printer supports IPP Everywhere or Mopria - almost every model sold since about 2018 does - you can simply add it and print, today, with no installer involved.
The trade-off is real and worth understanding before you rely on it. Driverless printing can remove access to automatic duplex options, tray and media selection, secure PIN release, colour profiles and scan-to-PC. For a single-function laser it costs you almost nothing. For an all-in-one where you scan regularly, install the vendor package. If you have already lost features and want them back, see driver is unavailable on Windows and double-sided printing not working.
macOS installs
Mac driver problems look different. macOS carries a set of built-in printer drivers and pulls others through software update, so a manual install is often unnecessary - add the printer at System Settings › Printers & Scanners › Add Printer and let macOS choose the driver.
When you do need a vendor package: unsigned or unnotarised installers are blocked, and you will need to allow them at System Settings › Privacy & Security after the first attempt fails. On macOS 26 Tahoe, also grant Privacy & Security › Local Network permission to the installer, or it will not find a network printer to install against. If the printer list is corrupt, Control-click inside it and choose Reset printing system, then add the printer again.
Brand-specific notes
| Brand | What to download | Known install trap |
|---|---|---|
| HP | HP Easy Start, or the full software from the model support page | HP Smart may install a partial setup; use Easy Start on Mac for a full install |
| Canon | MP Drivers plus the full software suite from the model page | Multiple MP Drivers versions installed together cause rollbacks |
| Epson | The complete driver package, plus ScanSmart for scanning | Epson Event Manager is retired; ScanSmart replaces it |
| Brother | Full Driver and Software Package | The basic driver installs cleanly but leaves the scanner unusable |
See our Epson hub and Canon hub for current package names, and Brother's Full Driver and Software Package if you need scan-to-PC working.
If nothing worked
An installer that fails on a clean system, with the old package removed, antivirus off and administrator rights, points at Windows itself. Run sfc /scannow followed by DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth from an administrator terminal, reboot, and try once more. If the Print Spooler is also unstable, fix that first using print spooler keeps stopping, because an unhealthy spooler will fail every install.
There is no repair-versus-replace decision here in hardware terms - the printer is fine. What you are weighing is time. If you have spent an hour on a driver, adding the printer through the driverless stack gets you printing immediately, and you can revisit the vendor package later when you actually need scanning or duplex.
If you would rather have the old packages traced and cleared for you before reinstalling, you can get help from a printer specialist over a screen share.

Frequently asked questions
Why does my printer driver installation roll back at the end?
A rollback almost always means the installer could not register the driver package, usually because an older version of the same package is still present and locked by the Print Spooler. Remove the old package with printui /s /t2, reboot, then run the installer again as administrator.
How do I completely remove an old printer driver in Windows 11?
Remove the device in Settings, Bluetooth & devices, Printers & scanners. Then press Win+R, run printui /s /t2, select the driver on the Drivers tab and choose Remove driver and driver package. Uninstall the vendor software in Settings, Apps, and reboot before reinstalling.
Do I need a driver at all in Windows 11 now?
For basic printing, usually not. From July 2026 new Windows 11 installations default to Windows Ready Print, which uses Mopria and IPP to print without a vendor driver. However, driverless printing can drop vendor features such as duplex options, tray selection and scan-to-PC, so a vendor package is still worth installing for an all-in-one.
The installer says a driver is already installed. What should I do?
That warning means a package with the same name is registered, possibly a much older version. Cancel the install, remove the existing package via printui /s /t2, reboot so the Print Spooler releases it, then install again. Installing over the top is what causes rollbacks.
Can antivirus software stop a printer driver installing?
Yes. Printer installers write to protected system directories and register kernel-adjacent components, which some security suites block silently. Pause real-time protection for the length of the install, then turn it straight back on and allow the printer software through the firewall when prompted.
