Canon support code 1000 (no paper in rear tray)

What causes it

• Rear tray genuinely empty or paper not inserted past the feed sensor
• Paper guide too tight, stopping the stack from sliding down
• Pickup roller dirty with paper dust and slipping on the sheet
• Paper loaded in the cassette when the job specifies the rear tray, or vice versa
• Glossy, heavy or curled paper the roller cannot grip

How to fix it, in order

Work down the list and stop when the printer recovers. The steps are ordered from most likely and least invasive to last resort.

1. Check which tray the job is using

   On two-tray PIXMA models the printer chooses the tray from the paper type and size you set on the printer and in the driver. Plain A4 or Letter usually feeds from the front cassette; photo paper from the rear tray. Load the tray matching the job or change the paper settings.

2. Reload the rear tray properly

   Remove the stack, fan it, and slide it in with the print side facing you until it stops at the feed rollers. Pull the paper guide across so it just touches the edge of the stack without pinching.

3. Press OK or Resume on the printer

   After loading, press the OK, Black or Color button (depending on the model) so the printer retries the feed. The job continues from where it stopped.

4. Clean the pickup roller

   From the printer's Setup, Maintenance menu choose Roller Cleaning. Run it once with no paper, then again with three sheets of plain paper. The roller should grip properly afterwards.

5. Check the paper type

   Very thin, heavily coated or curled paper will not feed from the rear tray. Flatten curled sheets or use a fresh ream. For thick card, load one sheet at a time.

6. Restart the printer

   If 1000 persists with paper correctly loaded, turn the printer off with the power button, wait 30 seconds, and turn it on. A stuck paper sensor flag often resets at power-on.
