Canon support code 1200 (cover is open)

Support code 1200 means the printer detects that the scanning unit or top cover is open. The sensor under the cover has not been pressed down, so the printer will not move the carriage or print until the cover is closed. If the cover is actually closed, the sensor or its actuator is stuck.

What causes it

  • Top cover or scanning unit not fully closed after a cartridge change
  • The inner cover (on models with one) left open
  • A loose object or paper edge stopping the cover from seating
  • Cover sensor tab broken or stuck
  • Printer firmware needing a restart after a jam

How to fix it, in order

Work down the list and stop when the printer recovers. The steps are ordered from most likely and least invasive to last resort.

  1. Open the cover fully and close it firmly

Lift the scanning unit or top cover until it clicks on its support, check that the inner cover (the small door over the cartridges on many models) is closed, then lower the main cover until it seats on both sides.

  2. Check for obstructions along the cover edge

Paper, a cable, or the paper output tray extension can stop the cover closing by a few millimetres. Remove anything in the way and close again.

  3. Press the cover sensor by hand

With the cover open, look for a small tab or switch at the rear or side of the cavity. Press it gently with a pen. If the error clears while it is pressed, the cover is not reaching the sensor; if it stays, the sensor is faulty.

  4. Restart the printer

Turn the printer off, wait 30 seconds and turn it back on with the cover closed. The printer rereads all sensors at start-up.

  5. Check the output tray

On TS and TR models the front output tray must be extended before printing; a retracted tray can produce a cover or output tray message alongside 1200.

When it is not worth fixing yourself

If you would rather not work through this alone, a printer specialist can take a look with you on a screen-share and tell you honestly whether the machine is worth saving.

Frequently asked questions

The cover is closed but code 1200 stays. What next?

Open and close it firmly, then restart the printer. If it persists, press the cover sensor by hand to test it.

Does 1200 appear on MAXIFY printers?

Yes. On MAXIFY models it refers to the front cover or scanning unit being open. Close it and press OK.

Can I scan while 1200 is showing?

Scanning from the flatbed usually still works, but printing and copying are blocked until the cover sensor is satisfied.
