Canon error U052 (wrong print head type)
U052 means 'the type of print head is incorrect'. The printer has read the print head's identification and found it does not match the model, or it cannot read the head properly and assumes it is the wrong one. On the older PIXMA models that show U-codes this is the most common print head message and it usually comes from dirty contacts or a failed head rather than a genuinely wrong part.
What causes it
- Ink on the print head or carriage contacts
- Print head not locked down
- Print head electrical failure, very common on iP4000 to iP4500 heads after years of use
- A print head from a different PIXMA model installed
- Carriage flex cable damage
How to fix it, in order
Work down the list and stop when the printer recovers. The steps are ordered from most likely and least invasive to last resort.
Turn off and open the cover
Power off, open the top cover, power on so the carriage moves to the centre, then unplug the printer to keep it there safely.
Remove the tanks and the print head
Lift out all ink tanks, raise the lock lever and remove the head. Look at the contacts on the back of the head and inside the carriage for ink.
Clean the contacts
Wipe the head contacts with a cloth lightly dampened with distilled water and dry thoroughly. Wipe the carriage contacts with a dry cloth. Let everything dry for 30 minutes.
Reinstall and lock
Seat the head, press down on its front, and lower the lever fully. Refit the tanks until each clicks, close the cover and power on.
Check the head part number
If the head was recently replaced, check that its part number (for example QY6-0059 for iP4200/MP500, QY6-0061 for iP4300/MP600, QY6-0067 for iP4500/MP610) is the one listed for your model.
Replace the print head
If U052 persists with clean contacts, the head has failed. Fit a new or known-good head of the correct part number.
