Canon error E04 and E05 (FINE cartridge not recognised)
E04 and E05 on the LED display mean a FINE cartridge is not recognised or is not installed correctly. E04 is shown when the cartridge cannot be identified; E05 is shown when the cartridge is the wrong type for this printer or when the printer cannot read it at all. They correspond to support codes 1682 and 1684 on models with screens.
What causes it
- Cartridge not pushed up until it clicked into the holder
- Protective tape still on the contacts
- Ink or dirt on the gold contacts
- Wrong cartridge model for the printer
- Cartridge electronics damaged, often after refilling
How to fix it, in order
Work down the list and stop when the printer recovers. The steps are ordered from most likely and least invasive to last resort.
Open the cover and find the flagged cartridge
The ink lamp next to the display blinks; the number of flashes or the lamp colour tells you whether it is the black or colour cartridge. Lower the lock lever on that side.
Remove tape and clean contacts
Take the cartridge out, peel away any orange tape, and wipe the gold contacts with a dry lint-free cloth.
Reinstall firmly
Insert the cartridge at an angle, push it up and back until it clicks, then raise the lock lever until it clicks. Close the cover and wait.
Check the cartridge number
Compare the cartridge with the numbers printed inside the cover (for example PG-245 and CL-246, or PG-275 and CL-276). A cartridge from another series gives E05.
Test with another cartridge
If the error remains, try a different cartridge of the correct type. If the error follows the cartridge, it is faulty; if it stays with the slot, the holder contacts are the problem.
Clean the holder contacts
Unplug the printer and wipe the spring contacts inside the holder with a dry cotton swab, then reinstall and restart.
