Canon error P22 (scanner error)

What causes it

• Scanner lock switch engaged after a move (on models that have one)
• Object or packaging under the glass
• Scanner cable loose where the scanner unit hinges
• Scanner motor or belt failure
• Lamp or sensor failure

How to fix it, in order

Work down the list and stop when the printer recovers. The steps are ordered from most likely and least invasive to last resort.

1. Restart with the lid closed

   Turn off, unplug for a minute, close the lid and power on. Watch through the glass edge for the scanner bar moving and lighting.

2. Check for a scanner lock

   Some MX models have a lock on the underside or left side of the scanner. Slide it to the unlocked position.

3. Inspect under the glass

   Open the lid and look for tape or debris at either end of the scanner bar's travel.

4. Check the scanner cable

   Lift the scanner unit (the whole top) as if changing cartridges and look at the flat cable at the hinge. If it has pulled out of its connector, push it back in with the printer unplugged.

5. Try printing

   If the printer reaches a ready state after restart, print a nozzle check. On some firmware the printer will print even if the scanner is dead once the error is dismissed.
