Canon laser error E000, E001, E003, E007 (fixing unit error)
E000-series codes on Canon laser printers and copiers refer to the fixing (fuser) unit. E000 means the fixing unit did not warm up within the expected time, E001 means it overheated, E003 means its temperature dropped too low during operation, and E007 means the fixing film or roller did not rotate. The machine stops and on most imageCLASS models the code must be cleared by a restart or, for repeated faults, a service reset.
What causes it
- Fixing unit worn out or its heater failed
- Thermistor dirty or faulty, giving wrong temperature readings
- Low mains voltage or a UPS or extension lead starving the heater
- Fixing film torn or the drive gear stripped (E007)
- DC controller or power supply fault
How to fix it, in order
Work down the list and stop when the printer recovers. The steps are ordered from most likely and least invasive to last resort.
Turn the machine off for ten minutes
Switch off at the main power switch and unplug. Let the fixing unit cool completely before restarting. A single E000 after a power dip will often clear.
Plug directly into a wall outlet
Laser fusers draw high current. Remove any extension lead, surge strip or UPS and test on a wall socket on its own circuit.
Check for paper in the fuser
Open the rear or fixing unit cover and check for paper wrapped around the rollers. Remove it carefully; a jammed sheet stops the film rotating and produces E007.
Clear the error code
On many imageCLASS models E000-E003 are latched and persist across restarts. Canon's procedure for small imageCLASS units is to open the service or report menu and perform the error clear, or on some models to hold specific keys while powering on. Check the procedure for your exact model; on imageRUNNER machines it is in the service mode under COPIER, FUNCTION, CLEAR, ERR.
Inspect the fixing unit
If the error repeats, remove the fixing unit (on LBP and small MF models it is a few screws at the rear) and look for torn film, worn rollers or burnt areas. Replace the fixing unit if damaged.
Replace the fixing unit
Fit a new or refurbished fixing unit for your model and clear the error. On imageRUNNER machines the fixing film and thermistors can be replaced individually by a technician.
