Web Connect lets a Brother machine with a touchscreen print from and scan to cloud services without a computer or phone in the loop. You register an account through Brother's portal, which issues a temporary ID that you type into the printer, and the printer then holds a token for that account. It is genuinely convenient for scanning straight to cloud storage from the panel. The caveat is age: the service list has shrunk as third-party services closed or changed their APIs, so several options named in older manuals no longer exist.

Version and licence: Free, and nothing is downloaded. Registration happens at bwc.brother.com, which redirects to moi.bwc.brother.com. The temporary ID it issues expires after 24 hours, and a machine can hold up to 10 registered accounts. Several of the original services, including Picasa, SkyDrive and Facebook, no longer exist.

Download Brother Web Connect

What it does

  • Scan directly from the printer panel to a cloud storage account
  • Print files stored in a linked cloud account from the panel
  • Up to 10 registered accounts on one machine
  • Outline and scan features that extract highlighted areas on supported models
  • No computer or phone required once registration is complete
  • Per-account access from the machine's touchscreen

How to install it

  1. Step 1

Connect the printer to your network and confirm it has internet access.

  2. Step 2

On the printer panel, open Web or Web Connect and accept the information notice.

  3. Step 3

Choose the cloud service you want and note that the printer displays instructions to visit the Brother portal.

  4. Step 4

On a computer or phone, go to bwc.brother.com, which redirects to the Brother Online portal.

  5. Step 5

Choose your printer model and the service, then sign in to that cloud account and authorise Brother.

  6. Step 6

The portal issues a temporary ID. Write it down, because it expires after 24 hours.

  7. Step 7

Back at the printer panel, choose Register Account and type in the temporary ID, then give the account a display name.

  8. Step 8

Test by scanning a page to that account from the panel.

Which printers it supports

Brother inkjet and laser all-in-ones with a touchscreen and a network connection that list Web or Web Connect in their panel menu. Basic single-function printers do not support it.

When Brother Web Connect will not work

The temporary ID is rejected

The ID expires after 24 hours, and it is tied to the specific model you selected in the portal. Generate a new one, check you picked the right model, and enter it exactly including case.

The service I want is not listed

Several original partners, including Picasa, SkyDrive and Facebook, have closed or changed and are no longer offered. Check the current list on the portal, and if your service is gone, scan to email or to a network folder instead.

The printer says it cannot connect to the server

Web Connect needs working DNS and outbound internet access. Print a Network Configuration report and check the gateway and DNS entries, and update the printer firmware, since expired root certificates in old firmware break these connections.

I have run out of account slots

A machine holds up to 10 accounts. Delete accounts you no longer use from the panel under Web Connect settings before registering a new one.

Scans arrive but are poor quality

Panel scan defaults are often set low to keep file sizes small. Raise the resolution and choose colour or greyscale as appropriate in the scan settings before starting the job, and choose PDF rather than JPEG for documents.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to install anything?

No. Web Connect runs on the printer, and registration happens through Brother's website.

How long is the temporary ID valid?

24 hours. If you take longer than that, generate a fresh one from the portal.

Why have some services disappeared?

Several of the original partners shut down or changed their platforms, so Brother removed them. The panel shows only the services still supported.
