Is the OKI C542dn right for you?

The C542dn is the current member of OKI's A4 colour LED workgroup range, running mono at 34 ppm and colour at 30 ppm with 1200 dpi resolution. It keeps the heavy media and banner capability that distinguishes OKI from mainstream laser brands. Because it is still supported, driver and firmware updates are available, which makes it a safer buy than the discontinued C532dn for a machine you expect to keep for years.

Setting up the OKI C542dn

Add the printer by IP with OKI's PCL6 driver and check the OKI support site for the latest firmware before deployment. Enable the Secure Print or Private Print feature in the driver if the printer sits in a shared area. When running label or card stock, set the media type on the printer's own menu as well as in the driver; the printer will otherwise apply plain-paper fuser settings and toner adhesion suffers.

1. Unbox and prepare. Remove every piece of shipping tape and packing material, install the ink cartridges, and load paper in the tray.
2. Join your Wi-Fi. Keep the printer close to the router for setup. Most printers only connect to the 2.4GHz band, so if your router broadcasts one merged network name you may need to split the bands temporarily. See our Wi-Fi guide if it will not join.
3. Install the setup app. Use OKI's official app rather than a driver you found on a search result — third-party driver sites are the most common source of printer malware.
4. Add the printer. On Windows 11: Settings › Bluetooth & devices › Printers & scanners › Add device. On macOS: System Settings › Printers & Scanners › Add Printer.
5. Print a test page and run a scan if this is an all-in-one, so you find any problem now rather than when you are in a hurry.
