The OKI LPR Utility is a small Windows program that sends print jobs to an OKI printer over TCP/IP using the LPR protocol, and adds job management on top: you can see queued jobs, cancel them, redirect a job to another OKI printer and get status back from the device. It is most useful where the standard Windows TCP/IP port is not giving you the control or status you need, and on older networks. Note the name carefully, since it is often written incorrectly as LP Utility elsewhere.

Version and licence: Free, Windows only, in the version 5 range. The correct name is OKI LPR Utility, not LP Utility, which is a common misspelling in third-party guides. It is downloaded from the specific model's page on the regional oki.com site.

What it does

  • Prints to OKI devices over TCP/IP using LPR
  • Job queue display with cancel and pause
  • Redirect a job to a different OKI printer
  • Status feedback from the device
  • Automatic discovery of OKI printers on the network
  • Handles printers whose IP address changes by re-discovering them

How to install it

  1. Step 1

Open the regional oki.com site for your country and find your printer model's support page.

  2. Step 2

Download the OKI LPR Utility from the utilities section for Windows.

  3. Step 3

Install the printer driver for your model first, since the utility routes jobs through it.

  4. Step 4

Run the LPR Utility installer as an administrator.

  5. Step 5

Open the utility and use the add printer function, which searches the network for OKI devices.

  6. Step 6

Select your printer, or enter its IP address if discovery does not find it.

  7. Step 7

Confirm the utility shows the printer status, then send a test job and watch it appear in the queue list.

Which printers it supports

OKI network printers and multifunction devices, including the C, MC, B and MB series, on Windows.

When OKI LPR Utility will not work

I cannot find LP Utility

The product is called OKI LPR Utility. Search that exact name on your regional oki.com site, under your model's utilities section.

The utility cannot find the printer

Discovery uses broadcast and does not cross subnets. Enter the IP address manually, reading it from the printer's network settings page or the panel.

Jobs sit in the queue and never print

Confirm the printer driver is installed and the device is online. Check that port 515 is not blocked by a firewall, since LPR uses it. Restart the print spooler if the queue is stuck.

The printer's IP address changed

Set a DHCP reservation on the router or a static address on the printer. The utility can re-discover the printer, but a fixed address avoids the problem returning.

Is there a Mac version?

No, the LPR Utility is Windows only. macOS has LPD printing built in, which you can select when adding a printer using the IP option.

Frequently asked questions

Is it called LP Utility or LPR Utility?

OKI LPR Utility. LP Utility is a common misspelling that makes it hard to find.

Do I need it for ordinary printing?

No. A standard Windows TCP/IP port works for most cases. The utility adds job control and status that the standard port does not give.

Where do I download it?

From your model's page on the oki.com site for your region, since OKI's regional coverage differs.
