OKI printer says check toner cartridge
The printer cannot confirm that a valid toner cartridge is fitted and locked in the position it is reporting. OKI printers use a lock lever on each cartridge that must be turned to release toner into the image drum, and an unlocked cartridge is the most frequent explanation. The printer stops rather than printing blank or faded pages.
What causes it
- The cartridge's blue lock lever has not been turned to the locked position
- The cartridge is not seated correctly in its image drum
- A third-party or refilled cartridge with an unrecognised chip
- Packing material or a sealing tape left in place on a new cartridge
- The cartridge is genuinely empty or its chip has failed
How to fix it, in order
Work down the list and stop when the printer recovers. The steps are ordered from most likely and least invasive to last resort.
Check the lock lever
Open the top cover, find the coloured lever on the toner cartridge for the colour reported, and turn it fully to the locked position as marked on the cartridge. This is the step most often missed after fitting a new cartridge, and it is what releases toner into the drum.
Reseat the cartridge in its image drum
Switch the printer off, lift out the image drum with the cartridge in it if your model requires that, then remove the cartridge and refit it so it sits level and clicks into the drum. Turn the lock lever afterwards and refit the assembly.
Remove all packing material
On a new cartridge look for tape, a plastic strip or a protective cover, and remove everything that is not part of the cartridge. OKI cartridges also ship with the lever in the unlocked position, so both actions are needed.
Clean the chip contacts
Wipe the contact area on the cartridge with a dry lint-free cloth and check the corresponding contacts inside the printer. Toner dust builds up on contacts and interferes with the chip being read.
Confirm the part number
Check the cartridge part number against the supplies list for your exact OKI model, since cartridges for neighbouring models often look identical but are coded differently. Regional coding also applies to some OKI supplies.
Power cycle the printer
Switch it off, unplug it for a minute, then start it again with the cartridge correctly fitted and locked. This clears a latched message that survives the physical fix.
Try a genuine cartridge to confirm
If a third-party cartridge is fitted, test with a genuine OKI one. Chips on non-genuine supplies are a common cause of this message, especially after a firmware update changed how they are validated.
Stopping it happening again
When it is not worth fixing yourself
If you would rather not work through this alone, a printer specialist can take a look with you on a screen-share and tell you honestly whether the machine is worth saving.
Frequently asked questions
What does the blue lever do?
It opens the port between the toner cartridge and the image drum. Until it is turned to locked, no toner reaches the drum.
Is the image drum separate from the toner?
Yes on OKI LED printers. Each colour has an image drum and a toner cartridge that clips into it, and they have different lifespans.
Why does this happen with a brand-new cartridge?
Almost always because the lock lever has not been turned or a sealing strip is still in place.
