Brother 'Toner Ended': what it means and how to get printing again

What causes it

• The toner cartridge genuinely reaching the end of its rated yield
• The machine set to Stop rather than Continue in the toner settings
• A refilled cartridge whose counter was never reset
• A starter cartridge, which has a much lower yield than a standard one
• Heavy graphics printing consuming toner faster than the rated page estimate

How to fix it, in order

Work down the list and stop when the printer recovers. The steps are ordered from most likely and least invasive to last resort.

1. Switch the machine to Continue mode

   On models with a menu, press Menu, choose General Setup, then Replace Toner, and set it to Continue rather than Stop. On touchscreen models it is under Settings, All Settings, General Setup, Replace Toner. In Continue mode the machine keeps printing after the counter expires, with the caveat that quality may fade and it will no longer warn you accurately.

2. Redistribute the remaining toner

   Open the front cover and pull out the drum and toner assembly together. Holding it level with both hands, rock it gently from side to side five or six times to spread the toner that remains along the cartridge. Slide it back in until it seats and close the cover. This typically buys tens of extra pages at usable quality.

3. Fit a new toner cartridge

   Press the green release lever on the drum unit to separate the old cartridge, then click the new one into the drum until it locks. Slide the assembly back into the machine and close the front cover firmly. Brother machines with a chip on the cartridge reset the counter automatically when a new genuine cartridge is fitted.

4. Check you have the right cartridge yield

   Brother sells standard and high-yield versions, for example TN-2410 and TN-2420 on the L2000 series. If Toner Ended appears sooner than you expect, check which one you bought, and remember the cartridge supplied in the box with a new printer is usually a low-yield starter.

5. Reset the counter after a refill

   If you refill cartridges rather than replacing them, the page counter still needs resetting or the machine will report Toner Ended again immediately. On many Brother laser models this is done by opening the front cover and holding the Go or OK button for several seconds until the panel acknowledges, and on keypad models by pressing Clear or Back and confirming the reset prompt. The exact sequence varies by model, so check the manual for yours.

6. Print a test page to confirm

   Once the new cartridge is in or Continue mode is set, print a test page from Menu, then Printer, then Print Options, then Test Print. Check for even coverage across the page, since faded bands after a cartridge change usually mean the cartridge is not fully seated rather than faulty.

7. Watch print quality if you continue

   In Continue mode, keep an eye on density and on any vertical streaking. Printing a laser cartridge well past empty can leave loose toner in the machine, so stop and fit a new cartridge as soon as pages start looking patchy rather than pushing on indefinitely.
