Brother 'Unable to Print 35': print head fault troubleshooting
Unable to Print 35 is a machine error raised by the print head drive circuit on Brother inkjets. The machine checks the head's electrical behaviour before and during printing, and stops with this code when the reading is outside its expected range. It is more serious than the carriage-jam codes because the fault sits in the head or its wiring rather than in something you can lift out with your fingers.
What causes it
- The print head overheating after a long or repeated cleaning cycle
- Ink that has leaked onto the head's electrical contacts
- A flat ribbon cable to the carriage that has worked loose or chafed
- Air in the ink lines after running a cartridge completely dry
- Genuine electrical failure of the print head
How to fix it, in order
Work down the list and stop when the printer recovers. The steps are ordered from most likely and least invasive to last resort.
Power off and let the machine rest
Hold the power button until the display clears, then unplug the machine at the wall. Leave it for at least thirty minutes, and longer if the error appeared after a series of head cleans. If the head simply got hot, a genuine cool-down period is what clears the code, and rushing this step is why people conclude the machine is dead when it is not.
Check the room temperature and ventilation
Brother inkjets expect an ambient temperature roughly between 10 and 35 degrees Celsius. A machine in a conservatory in summer or squeezed into a cupboard with no airflow will trip head temperature limits. Move it somewhere cooler with clear space at the back and sides before testing again.
Inspect the cartridges and the carriage for leaks
Open the ink cartridge cover and remove each cartridge. Look for ink pooled in the cartridge bay or wet contacts. Blot any ink with kitchen towel, wipe the contacts inside the machine with a dry lint-free cloth, and let the area dry fully before refitting. Leaking third-party cartridges are a frequent cause.
Refit genuine Brother cartridges
Fit a full set of genuine LC-series cartridges for testing if there is any doubt about the current ones. Push each one in until the lever clicks. Compatible cartridges that do not vent correctly starve the head and can make it run hot, which is exactly the condition this code reports.
Check the carriage ribbon cable
With the machine unplugged and the scanner cover raised, look at the flat cable that runs to the carriage. It should be seated in its clip and free of creases or shiny wear marks. Press the connector home gently if it looks proud, and avoid pulling on the cable itself.
Restart and run one purge, not several
Reconnect and power on. If the machine boots, run a single head cleaning from Menu, then Ink, then Cleaning, choosing Black or Colour as appropriate. Follow with a Print Quality Check page. Do not run repeated cleans, because that reheats the head and refills the ink absorber.
Note whether the error is instant or delayed
If the code appears the moment the machine powers on, the head or its wiring has failed. If it only appears after a few pages or after a clean, the fault is thermal and better cooling plus fewer cleaning cycles may keep the machine usable for a while longer.
Stopping it happening again
When it is not worth fixing yourself
If you would rather not work through this alone, a printer specialist can take a look with you on a screen-share and tell you honestly whether the machine is worth saving.
Frequently asked questions
Will leaving it off overnight fix it?
It genuinely can if the cause was heat. An overnight rest costs nothing and clears a fair proportion of temperature-related cases.
Is this caused by third-party ink?
Not always, but cartridges that vent poorly or leak are a recognised contributor. Testing with a genuine set is the quickest way to rule it in or out.
Can I clean the print head myself?
On Brother inkjets the head is not user-removable, so cleaning is limited to the machine's own cycles and a distilled water soak of the capping pad.
