Brother error 46, shown as "Unable to Print 46", "Unable to Clean 46" or "Machine Error 46", means the ink absorber box inside your Brother inkjet is full. It is the same underlying condition as Canon's 5B00 and Epson's ink pad message: the sponge that catches waste ink from head cleaning and start-up purges has reached its rated capacity, and the printer stops rather than risk ink escaping into the chassis.
Quick fixes first
- Note the exact wording. "Unable to Clean 46" means the printer refused a cleaning cycle; "Unable to Print 46" is the full stop. Both point at the same part.
- Power the machine off with the panel button, unplug for two minutes, and power on. A small number of 46 reports are a stuck counter read rather than a genuinely full absorber, and this clears those.
- Check the model number on the front - Brother's entry DCP and MFC-J inkjets have a fixed internal absorber, while some higher models have a serviceable part.
- Print anything you still need urgently if the machine is in a warning state and still working.
- Stop running head cleanings. Every additional cycle makes the situation worse and none of them will clear the error.
What the ink absorber does
Brother inkjets keep their printheads healthy by flushing ink through the nozzles. This happens on a schedule: at power-on if the machine has been idle, before some jobs, and every time you request a cleaning cycle from the panel or from Brother iPrint&Scan. The flushed ink has to go somewhere, and it goes into an absorbent pad, sometimes called the purge box or flushing box, sitting in the base of the machine.
The printer does not measure how wet the pad is. It counts how many purge events have occurred and estimates. When the count reaches the design limit, error 46 appears. That estimate is deliberately conservative, which is why a printer can throw error 46 with a pad that is not visibly dripping - and equally why ignoring the error for months eventually produces a puddle.
Fix 1: Confirm it is not a transient fault
Before assuming the worst, do a proper power cycle. Switch off at the panel button so the head parks correctly. Unplug the power lead from the wall - and, on MFC models, the phone line too. Wait two minutes. Reconnect and power on. If the error reappears within the boot sequence, it is a genuine counter limit.
Fix 2: The official route - absorber service
Brother's supported answer is to have the machine serviced. A Brother service centre or authorised repairer replaces the absorber pad or box and resets the purge counter with Brother's service tooling. This is the only outcome that actually solves the problem rather than deferring it.
The practical question is cost. Expect a bench fee plus labour plus the part. On an MFC-J business machine with a document feeder and fax, that can be money well spent. On a sub-entry DCP-J or MFC-J home model, the quote will frequently be higher than the current retail price of the same printer, which is an uncomfortable but honest fact about consumer inkjets.
Fix 3: The purge counter reset - what it is and what it costs you
Brother machines have a maintenance mode reachable from the panel that includes purge counter functions. Brother does not publish the entry sequence for consumer use, and it differs between keypad models, LCD models and touchscreen models. Technicians use it routinely as part of a proper absorber service.
Resetting the counter without replacing the absorber does exactly one thing: it lets the printer resume. The pad remains saturated. From that point, every purge adds ink to a pad that cannot take it, and it will eventually weep from the base of the chassis. If you go this route, place the printer on a washable tray, stop using cleaning cycles entirely, and treat it as a machine on borrowed time rather than a repaired one.
Fix 4: Rescue your data before you decide
MFC models store fax numbers, speed dials, scan destinations and call history. If you are heading toward replacement, get that off the machine while it still powers on. Print the address book from the panel: Menu, then Print Reports, then Tel Index List. Fix 5: Clear the print queue so the error does not follow you
Failed jobs sit in the queue and produce fresh errors on the replacement machine or after a reset. On Windows 11, open Settings, then Bluetooth & devices, then Printers & scanners, select the Brother, open the queue and cancel every job. If they will not clear, press Windows+R, run services.msc, and restart Print Spooler. On macOS 26 Tahoe, open System Settings, then Printers & Scanners, select the printer, clear the queue, and click Resume if it shows as paused.

Should you replace with another inkjet?
If error 46 arrived after two or three years on a home machine that prints a handful of pages a month, an inkjet may simply be the wrong tool. Occasional-use households pay for ink they never put on paper, because the printer spends it on keeping nozzles wet. A mono laser has no absorber, no cleaning cycles and no drying nozzles, and for text documents it is cheaper per page. If you genuinely need colour and photos, look at whether the model you are considering documents a user-replaceable maintenance box. That single specification determines whether the same conversation happens again in three years.
If nothing worked: the honest position
Error 46 has no home fix that both restores printing and solves the problem. Your options are a paid absorber service, a counter reset that buys time on a machine you accept is compromised, or replacement. On most home Brother inkjets, replacement wins on cost, and the machines that survive this decision are the ones with real workload behind them.
