Epson Printer Error: Non-Printing Features Are Available

Epson uses this message when the printer detects a fault in its print mechanism. Scanning still works, a few safe checks are worth trying, and then it is a warranty or repair decision.

"Printer error. Contact Epson Support. Non-printing features are available." is Epson's way of saying the printer has detected a fault in its print mechanism and has stopped printing to protect itself. Epson's own status-message tables say the printer may be damaged and that features such as scanning still work. A full power reset and a careful check for paper, packing material or objects inside are worth doing first. If the message comes back after that, it is a warranty claim or a repair-versus-replace decision, not a setting you can change.

What does the message actually mean?

Epson printers with a display show a short status message whenever something stops them. Most messages name a specific, fixable cause: paper out, a cassette not inserted, an ink pack to replace. This one is deliberately general. In Epson's product status message reference for models such as the WorkForce WF-7820 and WF-7840, the listed solution is that the printer may be damaged and you should contact Epson, while non-printing features such as scanning are still available. Epson's FAQ for the WorkForce Pro WF-M5799 gives the same explanation.

In plain terms, the printer's own self-check found something wrong with the part of the machine that puts ink on paper: the carriage, the paper path, the ink system or the electronics that drive them. It does not tell you which one, and Epson does not publish a per-model breakdown. The words "non-printing features are available" are the useful part. They tell you the scanner, the network connection and the control panel are still working, so the printer has not died completely.

Owners of EcoTank models sold in India and other markets, such as the L5290 and L5190, and of business inkjets like the M2140 and M2170, see the same wording. The fix path is the same for all of them.

How is it different from other Epson error messages?

Several Epson messages look alike but need different responses. Read the panel wording carefully before you do anything.

Message on the panelWhat it points toWhat to do
Printer error. Contact Epson Support. Non-printing features are available.A detected fault in the print mechanism; scanning still worksThe checks on this page, then warranty or repair
Printer error. Turn the power off and on again.Often a temporary obstruction or stallPower cycle and clear the paper path; see our guide to Epson's "turn power off and then on again" error
Ink pad nearing or at the end of its service lifeThe waste ink pads or maintenance box are fullReplace the maintenance box if your model has one; read Epson ink pad end of service life
Recovery ModeA firmware update failedReinstall the firmware by USB; see Epson Recovery Mode

If your printer shows an ink pad message rather than this one, the cause is known and the options are different. Our Epson ink pad reset guide explains them honestly.

Safe checks to try before you contact Epson

These steps cannot make things worse, and they clear the cases where the "fault" is really something physically in the way. Epson's own guidance for the related power-cycle message is to turn the product off and on and then check for jammed paper or protective materials, so this is the same logic applied in more detail.

  1. Write down the exact wording and any code. Some models show a numeric code with the message. Take a photo of the screen. You will need it for a warranty claim or a repair quote.
  2. Turn the printer off with its power button, wait until the screen goes dark, then unplug the power cord from the wall. Leave it for at least three minutes so the electronics fully reset.
  3. Look inside. Lift the scanner unit and look along the path the print head travels. Remove any torn paper, labels, paper clips, staples or bits of packing foam. On a new printer, check every piece of orange or blue tape and packing material has been removed, including inside the ink tank area and the rear paper feed.
  4. Check the paper sources. Pull out the paper cassette and look into the slot with a torch. Check the rear feed slot as well. A folded sheet or a small object behind the cassette can stop the feed mechanism.
  5. Do not force anything. If the print head is parked and will not slide gently by hand when the power is off, leave it. Forcing the carriage can damage the drive belt or the encoder strip.
  6. Keep an EcoTank level. Do not tip an ink tank printer on its side or upside down to shake something loose. Ink in the tanks and tubes can leak into the mechanism.
  7. Plug the printer straight into a wall outlet and turn it on. Wait for it to finish its start-up cycle, which can take a few minutes.

If the printer reaches its home screen and prints a nozzle check, the problem was an obstruction. Print a few normal pages to confirm. If the message returns at start-up or as soon as you print, the fault is inside the machine.

What usually sits behind it

Because the message is generic, the honest answer is that only a technician with service tools can say for sure. The general categories are:

  • A carriage that cannot move as expected, from an obstruction, a worn or slipped belt, or a dirty or damaged encoder strip.
  • A paper feed or sensor fault, where the printer cannot confirm paper is moving as it should.
  • An ink system fault, such as a problem with the pump or capping station that keeps the print head healthy.
  • An electronic fault on the main board or print head.

None of these can be fixed with a software tool, a "resetter" or a counter reset. Those programs change counters; they do not repair hardware. Our article on printer resetter software explains the risks of downloading them.

Can I still scan while the printer is down?

Illustration of a flatbed scanner scanning a document and sending the page to a laptop

Yes, and that is what "non-printing features are available" means. Scanning to a computer, to a memory device or to email should still work if it worked before. On a Windows PC or Mac, Epson's Epson ScanSmart app is the usual tool, and phones can scan through Epson Smart Panel. Copying is a printing job, so it will not work.

If scanning stops too, or the scanner reports its own error, see our guide to a scanner that has stopped working, but expect the same underlying fault.

Is a firmware update worth trying?

Only if the printer gets back to a ready state after the checks above. A current firmware version can fix bugs that cause false errors, and Epson delivers updates through the printer's own update menu, the Epson Software Updater, or the support page for your model on epson.com. Keep the printer plugged in and do not turn it off during the update. If an update is interrupted, the printer may start in Recovery Mode instead. Our printer firmware update guide explains how to update safely.

Do not install firmware from anywhere other than Epson. Modified firmware is the most common way an Epson printer ends up unusable.

Warranty, repair or replace?

If the printer is under warranty, stop here and contact Epson through the support page for your exact model. Opening the printer beyond the normal user-access covers can complicate a claim. Have the model number, serial number, proof of purchase and the photo of the message ready. Our printer warranty guide shows how to check your cover.

If it is out of warranty, compare the repair quote with the price of a new printer. For an inexpensive home inkjet, a bench repair often costs a large share of a replacement. For an EcoTank with ink still in the tanks, or a business model, a repair is more often worth it. Our guide to whether a printer is worth repairing walks through the numbers, and where to get a printer repaired covers the realistic options.

When you search for help, use the contact details on epson.com only. Phone numbers in search ads and on lookalike sites are a common route to paid "support" scams; our guide to printer support phone number scams explains how to spot them.

Frequently asked questions

What does "non-printing features are available" mean on an Epson printer?

It means the printer has detected a fault in the parts that print and has stopped printing, but everything else still works. Epson lists the message with the explanation that the printer may be damaged and that features such as scanning remain available.

Can I fix this Epson printer error myself?

Sometimes. Turn the printer off, unplug it for a few minutes, and remove any jammed paper, packing tape or objects along the print head path and paper feed. If the message returns after a clean restart, the fault is inside the machine and needs warranty service or a repair.

Is this the same as the Epson ink pad message?

No. The ink pad message names the waste ink pads or maintenance box and has its own fix, such as replacing the box. The non-printing features message is a general print mechanism fault that does not point to a user-replaceable part.

Will a resetter program clear the error?

No. Resetter tools change internal counters, mainly the ink pad counter. This message comes from a detected hardware fault, so changing counters does not repair it, and unofficial tools carry malware and firmware risks.

Can I still scan and copy?

You can scan to a computer, phone or email as before, because scanning is a non-printing feature. Copying needs the printer to print, so it will not work until the fault is repaired.
