Epson 'Printer error. Turn power off and then on again': full fix guide
This is Epson's generic fatal error message, and it appears whenever the printer's self-test finds a condition it cannot recover from on its own. It is usually accompanied by a hex code such as 0xE8, 0xF1 or 0x97, and that code is the only clue to which subsystem failed. Doing exactly what the message says almost never works, because the printer re-runs the same failing test on the next boot and stops again.
What causes it
- A physical obstruction stopping the carriage or the paper transport
- Waste ink pads or the maintenance box at their capacity limit
- Cartridges not seated, leaking, or with unreadable chips
- Firmware corrupted by an interrupted update
- Motor, sensor or main board hardware failure
How to fix it, in order
Work down the list and stop when the printer recovers. The steps are ordered from most likely and least invasive to last resort.
Write down the hex code before anything else
Scroll or read the full message and note the code shown, which will look like 0x97, 0xE8, 0xF1 or similar. That code is the single most useful piece of information you have, because the fix for a board fault and the fix for a paper obstruction are completely different. Photograph the screen if the message clears too quickly.
Perform a proper power drain, not a restart
Turn the printer off with the power button, unplug it from the printer and from the wall, then hold the printer's power button for 30 seconds to discharge the electronics. Leave it disconnected for five to ten minutes before plugging it directly into a wall socket. This is a genuinely different operation from turning it off and on, and it clears a real proportion of these errors.
Clear the entire paper path
Pull the cassette out and look underneath it, remove the rear cover and inspect the duplex path, and check the exit slot. Then lift the scanner unit and slide the carriage across by hand to see what is under the print head. Remove every scrap, and count what you remove against the sheet that jammed.
Reseat cartridges and dry any spilled ink
Take each cartridge out, wipe the chip with a dry lint-free cloth, blot pooled ink out of the carriage with kitchen towel, and press each cartridge back until it clicks. If any cartridge is compatible or refilled, fit a genuine one for testing, since a bad chip is a common cause of fatal errors that look mechanical.
Check the maintenance box or ink pad status
Replace the maintenance box if your model has one and the pad inside is saturated. On models with internal pads, run Epson Status Monitor 3 on Windows over USB and read the maintenance information. A printer at its pad limit will keep throwing this message no matter how clean the paper path is.
Reinstall the firmware over USB
Connect the printer to a computer by USB, install Epson Software Updater, and let it check for firmware. If the printer is in Recovery Mode after a failed update, the updater will offer a full firmware image. Never interrupt this process, and do not attempt it over a Wi-Fi connection that drops.
Judge by the code and the behaviour
If the code is 0x97 or the error appears instantly with no mechanical movement, the main board has failed and the machine is done. If the error follows a sweep, a purge or a feed attempt, keep working on the mechanical cause because those are the recoverable cases.

Small-panel models show E-01 instead, and some models show nothing beyond the message. In that case work through the mechanical checks in order, since you have no shortcut.
Can a factory reset clear it?
No. A fatal error locks the panel before you can reach the settings menu, so the reset options are unavailable.
