Epson Says Paper Jam But There Is No Paper: How to Find What the Sensor Is Seeing
A phantom Epson jam almost always means a torn scrap, dust on an optical sensor, or glazed feed rollers. Here is the systematic search that finds it.

When an Epson insists there is a paper jam and the paper path is visibly empty, one of three things is happening: a fragment of paper too small to see is holding a sensor flag down, dust or ink mist has fogged an optical sensor, or the feed rollers are slipping so the printer never sees the page arrive when it expected to. All three are fixable at home with a torch, tweezers and fifteen minutes.
Quick fixes first
- Power the printer off with the panel button and unplug it from the wall. Never poke around a live paper path.
- Remove the paper cassette completely and the rear feed tray. Look into the empty spaces with a torch from several angles.
- Open the rear cover or the duplex unit at the back of the machine and remove it entirely if it slides out.
- Turn the printer around and, if it is light enough, tip it gently to look up into the cassette bay - scraps collect there.
- Reassemble, plug in, power on and print one page. If the error returns immediately with no paper movement, go to the sensor section below.

Why Epson reports jams that are not there
Paper movement is monitored by small flags and optical sensors along the path. A flag is a thin plastic lever that a sheet of paper knocks aside as it passes; the printer times how long each flag is deflected. If a flag is stuck down by a scrap or a bent piece of plastic, the printer believes paper is permanently present. If a flag never moves because a roller failed to grab the page, the printer believes paper failed to arrive - also reported as a jam.
Optical sensors work differently: a beam is broken by the passing sheet. Paper dust, ink aerosol from years of printing, or a stray fibre across the emitter produces a permanent "paper present" or permanently confused reading.
Epson also codes this condition as W-01 on models that display letter codes. It means the same thing as the plain-language jam message.
Fix 1: The systematic scrap hunt
Work in this order, because these are the locations in descending order of likelihood.
The rear feed cover. On most WorkForce and Expression models a cover at the back unclips or slides out. Behind it is the tightest bend in the whole paper path, and that is where the trailing edge of a jammed sheet usually tears off. Remove the cover completely, look inside it as well as inside the printer, and run a finger along the rollers.
The duplex unit. If your model prints two-sided automatically, the duplex assembly is a separate module, usually part of that same rear cover. Paper that jammed on the flip is often torn in half, with the visible half removed by whoever cleared it and the hidden half still inside.
The cassette bay. Pull the cassette right out and shine a torch into the empty slot. Scraps drop down here and sit on the base plate where the pick roller cannot reach them but the sensor flag can be caught by them.
Under the carriage. Open the scanner unit and look at the platen area below where the head travels. Small labels, photo paper backing and receipt-sized offcuts get dragged here.
Use fine tweezers or long-nose pliers, and always pull in the direction the paper travels, never backwards against the rollers.
Fix 2: Clean the paper sensors
With the printer unplugged and the rear cover off, look for small black plastic components with a visible gap, often U-shaped, sitting beside the paper path. Blow them out with a can of compressed air held upright and at a short burst - not a lung-full of breath, which carries moisture. If you can see a fibre across the gap, remove it with tweezers.
The paper-width sensor on the carriage is another candidate. It sits on the underside of the carriage assembly and reads the paper edge. Ink mist builds up on it over years. Move the carriage gently to the middle with the printer off, and wipe the underside sensor window with a dry cotton bud.
Fix 3: Clean the feed rollers
Rollers glaze over time - paper dust polishes the rubber until it stops gripping. A glazed roller produces a jam message at the same point in every job.
Dampen a lint-free cloth with plain water (or isopropyl alcohol if you have it), wring it out until barely damp, and wipe each rubber roller you can reach while rotating it with a fingertip. Keep going until the cloth stops coming away grey. Let everything dry for ten minutes before powering on. Do not use household cleaners, oils or silicone sprays - they make rollers slippery permanently.
Some Epson models include a roller cleaning routine: on the panel go to Setup, then Maintenance, then Paper Guide Cleaning, and follow the prompt to feed a sheet of plain paper through repeatedly. Run it three or four times. If your model offers it, do this after the manual clean.
Fix 4: Check the paper itself
Paper is the variable people never suspect. Sheets that have absorbed humidity curl at the edges and feed at an angle, tripping the skew sensor. Paper stored in a garage or a bathroom cupboard is the classic offender. So is the last twenty sheets of a ream, which have been pressed flat against a curling base.
Open a fresh ream, fan the stack, load no more than the fill line, and set the edge guides so they touch the stack without squeezing it. Confirm the panel's paper size and type match what you loaded - Setup, then Printer Settings, then Paper Source Settings - because a mismatch makes the printer expect the sheet at a different moment.
Fix 5: Reset the sensor state
Once the path is clean, the printer may still hold the latched error. Power it off with the panel button, unplug for five minutes, hold the power button for 30 seconds while unplugged, then reconnect and power on. This clears the stored fault and forces a fresh sensor read at boot.
Fix 6: Clear the computer side
The half-printed job is still queued and will trigger the error again the moment the printer comes back. On Windows 11, open Settings, then Bluetooth & devices, then Printers & scanners, select the Epson, open the queue and cancel everything. If jobs will not delete, press Windows+R, run services.msc and restart the Print Spooler service. On macOS 26 Tahoe, open System Settings, then Printers & Scanners, select the printer, clear the queue and click Resume if the printer shows paused.
Fix 7: Firmware
Epson has shipped firmware updates that adjust paper feed timing on specific models. Use Epson Software Updater, or on the panel go to Setup, then Firmware Update, then Update. It is a long shot, but it costs nothing and occasionally resolves a model-specific false jam pattern outright.
Matching the symptom to the cause
| When the message appears | Most likely cause | Go to |
|---|---|---|
| Immediately at power-on, before any paper moves | Sensor flag held down by a scrap, or a fogged sensor | Fix 1 and Fix 2 |
| As soon as a job is sent, no paper moves | Pick roller not gripping, or paper loaded wrong | Fix 3 and Fix 4 |
| Halfway through the first page | Obstruction in the path, or a torn scrap in the rear bend | Fix 1 |
| Only on two-sided jobs | Duplex unit obstruction or misseated duplex module | Fix 1 |
| Only with photo or thick paper | Wrong paper type set, or unsupported weight | Fix 4 |
| Every few jobs, at random | Glazed rollers, or humid paper | Fix 3 and Fix 4 |
If nothing worked
A false jam that survives a full clean, a roller wash and a hard reset usually means a failed sensor or a broken flag - a plastic lever snapped off inside the path. That is a workshop job requiring partial disassembly. On a mid-range or business Epson it is worth a quote; on a budget all-in-one the diagnosis fee alone will approach the replacement cost, and worn rollers on a machine that old will keep producing jams anyway.
Before writing it off, note that this is one of the faults most often solved by a second pair of eyes and a brighter torch. If you want someone to walk the path with you, you can get help from a printer specialist.

Frequently asked questions
Why does my Epson say paper jam when there is no paper?
Because a sensor thinks paper is present or thinks paper failed to arrive. The usual causes are a torn scrap holding a sensor flag down, dust on an optical sensor, or glazed feed rollers that no longer grip the page.
Where do paper scraps hide in an Epson printer?
In descending order: behind the rear feed cover at the tightest bend in the path, inside the duplex unit, in the empty cassette bay under the tray, and under the carriage on the platen.
What does Epson error W-01 mean?
W-01 is the letter-code equivalent of the paper jam message on Epson models that use W and E codes. Clear the paper path front and rear, then power-cycle the printer to reset the sensor.
How do I clean Epson feed rollers?
Unplug the printer, dampen a lint-free cloth with water or isopropyl alcohol until barely damp, and wipe each rubber roller while turning it by hand until the cloth stops picking up grey residue. Let it dry ten minutes. Never use oil or silicone spray.
Can old or damp paper cause false jams?
Yes, and it is a very common cause. Paper stored in a humid room curls and feeds at an angle, tripping the skew sensor. Use a fresh ream from a sealed pack, fan the stack and do not overfill the tray.
Will a firmware update fix a phantom paper jam?
Occasionally. Epson has shipped feed-timing adjustments for specific models. It is free to try via Epson Software Updater or the printer's Firmware Update menu, but it will not fix a physical obstruction or a dirty sensor.
