Brother 'Unable to Scan A5': scanner carriage error fix

What causes it

• The scanner carriage caught on its rail or belt
• The machine switched off or unplugged part way through a scan
• Something heavy resting on the scanner lid distorting the glass frame
• A scanner transport lock left engaged after transporting the machine
• Scanner motor, belt or home sensor failure

How to fix it, in order

Work down the list and stop when the printer recovers. The steps are ordered from most likely and least invasive to last resort.

1. Clear the glass and the lid and restart

   Take anything off the top of the machine, lift the document cover and remove any originals from the glass, then close the cover flat. Hold the power button to switch off, unplug for two minutes, and reconnect. Listen for the scanner carriage travelling under the glass in the first few seconds after power-on.

2. Check for a scanner transport lock

   Some Brother multifunction models have a lock switch, usually on the underside at the left rear of the scanner assembly, marked with a padlock symbol. Machines that have been shipped or moved often have it engaged. Slide it to the unlocked position and restart before doing anything else.

3. Do a full ten-minute power drain

   Unplug at the wall for ten minutes so the machine forgets where it last believed the scanner carriage was. This matters specifically for machines that lost power mid-scan, because on the next boot they check for the carriage at a position where it no longer is and report a fault for that reason alone.

4. Watch and listen during the boot

   Power on and pay attention to the noise from under the glass. A short smooth travel then silence is normal. Grinding, repeated clicking or a carriage that visibly moves a few centimetres and stops indicates a mechanical problem in the belt or the rail. Total silence means the motor is not being driven at all.

5. Check the ADF is clear and closed

   If your model has an automatic document feeder, lift its cover and remove any original still in the rollers, then close it until it clicks. A jammed original or a partly open ADF cover holds a sensor and produces a scanner-family error even though the flatbed itself is fine.

6. Try a scan from a computer if the machine boots

   Install the Brother full driver and software package, or use Brother iPrint&Scan, and attempt a scan from the computer. A scan that starts and fails at a specific point along the page confirms a mechanical stall at that position, which is much more informative than the panel code alone.

7. Decide whether you need the scanner

   If the error blocks the machine entirely, it has to be repaired or replaced. If printing still works and only scanning fails, a cheap standalone flatbed scanner restores full capability for far less than a scanner repair on a multifunction.
