Brother 'Fuser Error': overheating and warm-up failure fix
The fuser is the heated roller assembly that bonds toner to the paper, and it has to reach and hold a precise temperature. Fuser Error means the machine's thermistor readings did not match what the firmware expects, either because the fuser did not warm up in time, got too hot, or reported an implausible temperature. Brother's advice is to switch off, wait, and switch on again, which genuinely does clear a proportion of cases.
What causes it
- A one-off temperature reading glitch during warm-up
- Paper jammed in or around the fuser blocking heat transfer
- Poor ventilation, with the machine pushed into a cupboard or against a wall
- A failed thermistor, heater lamp or fuser assembly
- Low mains voltage or a shared circuit unable to supply the warm-up surge
How to fix it, in order
Work down the list and stop when the printer recovers. The steps are ordered from most likely and least invasive to last resort.
Switch the machine off and leave it for fifteen minutes
Turn the machine off at the power button and unplug it, then leave it for at least fifteen minutes so the fuser and its thermistors return to room temperature. This is Brother's own guidance and it is not a token step, because a fuser that is still hot will fail its warm-up check again immediately on restart.
Check for paper in the fuser area
Open the rear cover, which on most Brother lasers gives direct access to the fuser. Wait until the area is cool before touching anything, then look for a jammed sheet or a strip of paper wrapped around the rollers. Pull anything you find out slowly and evenly, and check that no fragment is left behind.
Improve the machine's ventilation
Pull the printer out so there is at least ten centimetres of clear space behind and at the sides, and make sure the vents are not blocked by paper stacks or a wall. A laser printer in an enclosed cupboard runs hot and trips temperature limits, and this alone fixes a surprising number of repeat cases.
Plug the machine directly into a wall socket
Laser printers draw a substantial surge when the fuser warms up. Remove any extension lead, adaptor or shared strip and plug the machine straight into a wall socket on a circuit that is not carrying a kettle or a heater. Under-voltage during warm-up produces exactly this error.
Check the paper you are using
Damp paper absorbs heat from the fuser and can pull the temperature below the expected curve. Load fresh paper from the middle of a newly opened ream and avoid heavy card or labels that are not rated for laser use, since those also load the fuser unusually.
Restart and watch the warm-up
Power on and listen. A healthy Brother laser makes its warm-up noises and reaches ready within about thirty seconds from cold. If the error returns at the same point every time after a proper cool-down, the fuser hardware rather than the environment is at fault.
Check the fuser page count if the machine boots
Look under Machine Information, then Parts Life, for the fuser count. Brother fusers are typically rated around 50,000 to 100,000 pages depending on the model. A machine near or past that figure that is throwing temperature errors has a worn fuser, and on business models the fuser is a replaceable part.

Is a fuser error dangerous?
The machine shuts down deliberately to avoid overheating, so the safety behaviour is working. Do not bypass it or run the printer with covers removed.
How long should I really leave it off?
Fifteen minutes minimum, and half an hour is better if the machine had been printing a long job. Restarting a hot fuser simply repeats the failed check.
Can a jam cause a permanent fuser fault?
A sheet wrapped around the roller can damage its coating, which then shows as marks on every page. Clearing jams promptly and completely reduces that risk.
