Brother 'Cartridge Error': fixing a rejected toner cartridge
Cartridge Error means the machine has found a toner cartridge but cannot accept it. Brother lasers use a small white or green actuator arm inside the machine that must be tripped by a corresponding feature on the cartridge, plus an optical or chip check, and Cartridge Error is what you get when that handshake fails. It is most often a seating problem or a cartridge the machine will not validate rather than a hardware fault.
What causes it
- The toner cartridge and drum unit not correctly assembled together
- Packaging or a shipping lock still attached to the new cartridge
- The detection actuator inside the machine stuck or fouled with toner dust
- A compatible cartridge with a chip the firmware rejects after an update
- A cartridge intended for a different Brother model or region
How to fix it, in order
Work down the list and stop when the printer recovers. The steps are ordered from most likely and least invasive to last resort.
Remove the assembly and check the pairing
Open the front cover and pull the drum unit and toner cartridge out together. Check the toner cartridge is the right one for your machine, since TN-2320, TN-2420 and TN-3480 cartridges all look broadly similar but are not interchangeable. The part number is printed on the box and on the cartridge itself.
Separate and reassemble the cartridge and drum
Press the green lock lever on the drum unit, take the toner cartridge out, and then push it back in until it clicks firmly. Do not force it at an angle. The click is what engages the latch, and a cartridge that has not latched will present exactly this error even though it appears to be in place.
Remove every piece of packaging
New cartridges arrive with a protective sheet, sometimes an orange plastic insert, and a sealing strip. Take all of them off and check the sealing strip came out fully, since a strip that tears leaves a piece inside that blocks the toner path. Compare the cartridge with the picture in the quick setup guide if you are unsure.
Find and free the detection actuator
With the assembly out, shine a torch into the cavity and look for a small white plastic arm or lever on the side wall, usually towards the front. Push it gently with a fingertip and let go; it should move freely and spring back. If it is caked with toner dust, wipe it with a dry cotton bud.
Clean the corona wire and sensor window
Slide the green tab on the drum unit fully from left to right several times and leave it in the home position at the left. Wipe the small window on the side of the toner cartridge with a dry lint-free cloth. This removes the dust that stops the optical check from reading correctly.
Refit and power cycle
Slide the assembly back in level until it seats, close the front cover firmly, and then switch the machine off and on with the power button. The detection routine runs at power-on and on cover close, and a full restart gives the cleanest possible retest.
Test with a genuine cartridge
If the cartridge is compatible or refilled, fit a genuine Brother one to test. Firmware updates change chip validation, and a compatible that worked last year may now be rejected. If the genuine cartridge is accepted, the compatible is the problem and the supplier should replace it with an updated chip version.

Is Cartridge Error the same as No Toner?
They overlap but differ. No Toner means nothing was detected; Cartridge Error means something was detected but rejected, which more often points at the wrong cartridge or a failed validation.
Can I clean the chip contacts?
Wipe them with a dry lint-free cloth. Avoid liquids and abrasives, and never scrape the chip surface.
Will a firmware update fix it?
With genuine cartridges, sometimes. With compatibles, an update is more likely to cause this error than fix it, so weigh that up before installing one.
