Brother 'Cover is Open': clearing a false open-cover message

What causes it

• The front cover, rear cover or ADF cover not fully latched
• The drum and toner assembly not pushed fully in, holding the front cover open
• A jammed sheet or fragment preventing a cover from closing flush
• The small plastic actuator tab on the cover snapped off
• A failed interlock switch inside the machine

How to fix it, in order

Work down the list and stop when the printer recovers. The steps are ordered from most likely and least invasive to last resort.

1. Open and close each cover deliberately

   Work through them one at a time: the front cover, the rear cover, the duplex tray if fitted, and the ADF cover on multifunction models. Open each fully and close it with a firm press until it latches audibly. A cover that came to rest a hair short of its catch is by far the most common cause.

2. Reseat the drum and toner assembly

   Open the front cover and pull out the drum unit and toner cartridge together, then slide them back in level until they stop with a firm seat. An assembly sitting slightly proud stops the front cover from closing flush, and the resulting message looks identical to a broken switch.

3. Check the rear cover and the fuser area

   Open the rear cover and look for a jammed sheet or a strip of paper. Let the area cool first if the machine has been printing. Close the rear cover so both sides latch, since it is easy to close one side and leave the other resting, particularly on the L2000 series.

4. Find the actuator tab on the cover

   Look along the inner edge of the front cover for a small plastic peg or tab that pushes into a slot in the machine body when the cover closes. Check it is present and not snapped off, and shine a torch into the matching slot to confirm nothing is jammed in there.

5. Test the switch by hand

   With the front cover open and the machine on, press gently into the switch slot with a plastic stylus or a cotton bud and watch the display. If the message clears while you press, the switch works and the problem is the cover or the tab not reaching it. If nothing changes, the switch itself has failed.

6. Power cycle after any change

   Switch the machine off with the power button, wait 30 seconds and switch back on with all covers properly closed. Some models latch the message until the next boot even once the cover is correctly shut, so a restart avoids chasing a fault you have already fixed.

7. Check the ADF cover on multifunction models

   The automatic document feeder has its own cover and its own switch. Lift it, remove any original still in the rollers, and close it until it clicks. It is easy to overlook because it is not where people expect a print-blocking cover to be.
