Brother 'Unable to Print 50' and 'Unable to Clean 50': purge unit fault

What causes it

• The purge cam or pump seized with dried ink after long disuse
• Paper or debris jammed in the maintenance assembly at the right-hand side
• The ink absorber saturated so waste ink cannot drain away
• The carriage failing to park over the cap correctly
• Mechanical failure of the maintenance unit drive

How to fix it, in order

Work down the list and stop when the printer recovers. The steps are ordered from most likely and least invasive to last resort.

1. Unplug the machine for ten minutes

   Hold the power button until the display goes dark and disconnect at the wall. Leave it for ten minutes so the fault state clears and the machine attempts a fresh initialisation on the next boot. Do not simply switch it off and on at the panel, which resumes rather than resets the cycle.

2. Inspect the right-hand parking area

   With the power off, raise the scanner cover and slide the carriage to the centre of the rail. Look at the far right where the head normally parks and you will see the rubber cap, a wiper blade and the top of the purge assembly. Check for scraps of paper, dried ink crusts or a foreign object wedged in there and clear anything you find.

3. Soften dried ink with distilled water

   Put a few millilitres of warm distilled water into the rubber cap using a syringe or a dropper, taking care not to flood the surrounding area. Slide the carriage back over the cap so the moisture is held against the head and the pump path, and leave the machine overnight. This frees a large share of seized purge units.

4. Check that the carriage parks cleanly

   Push the carriage fully to the right by hand and feel whether it seats squarely over the cap. If it stops a few millimetres short or feels like it is riding over something, there is debris or a mechanical obstruction under the cap that must come out before the cycle can complete.

5. Reconnect and listen to the initialisation

   Power on and listen at the right-hand side. You should hear the pump run for a second or two with a wet, whirring sound. If there is silence or a repeated clicking, the drive is not turning. That distinction is the most useful diagnostic information this code gives you.

6. Run one cleaning cycle only

   If the machine boots, go to Menu, then Ink, then Cleaning and run one cycle. Print a Print Quality Check page. Do not chain cleaning cycles, because each one sends ink to the absorber and pushes you towards the separate absorber-full condition that is far harder to resolve.

7. Check for a prior absorber warning

   Look back at whether the machine has been warning about the ink absorber being near full. A saturated absorber prevents the purge from completing and produces exactly this code, and in that case the fix is an absorber service rather than anything you can do at home.
