Unsupported cartridge

Lexmark reports an unsupported cartridge

The printer read the cartridge chip and decided the cartridge is not intended for this machine or this region. Unlike a defective cartridge error, the chip was read successfully; the printer simply does not accept what it says. Region coding, wrong part numbers and third-party chips are the usual reasons.

What causes it

  • The cartridge is coded for a different geographic region
  • A part number intended for a different Lexmark model was fitted
  • A third-party or remanufactured chip is not recognised as valid
  • A firmware update changed which cartridges the printer accepts
  • A return-program cartridge was refilled, which the chip flags

How to fix it, in order

Work down the list and stop when the printer recovers. The steps are ordered from most likely and least invasive to last resort.

  1. Check the part number against the model

Compare the number on the cartridge with the supplies label inside the front door or the supplies list on Lexmark's support page for your exact model. Cartridges that look physically identical are often coded for different machines, and fitting one is the most frequent cause.

  2. Check the region code

Lexmark cartridges are sold with regional coding, and a cartridge bought in a different region will be rejected even though it fits. If the cartridge came from an overseas seller, this is very likely the explanation and returning it is the practical answer.

  3. Reseat the cartridge and power cycle

Switch the printer off, remove and refit the cartridge until it clicks, then unplug the printer for a minute and restart it. This rules out a misread and clears a latched message before you conclude the cartridge is genuinely rejected.

  4. Fit a genuine cartridge to confirm

Install a genuine Lexmark cartridge of the correct part number and region. If the error clears, the previous unit was the problem. This is the quickest way to separate a cartridge issue from a printer fault.

  5. Understand the return-program restriction

Return-program cartridges are sold at a lower price on the condition that they are returned rather than refilled, and their chips reflect that. A refilled return-program cartridge is normally rejected, whereas the regular version can legitimately be refilled by a reputable remanufacturer.

  6. Check the firmware level

Open the printer's web page by entering its IP address in a browser and look at the firmware version under Settings. If a recent update coincided with the error, third-party chips that previously worked may now be refused, and only genuine supplies will clear it.

When it is not worth fixing yourself

If you would rather not work through this alone, a printer specialist can take a look with you on a screen-share and tell you honestly whether the machine is worth saving.

Frequently asked questions

Can I make a third-party cartridge work?

Sometimes, if the supplier provides a chip matched to your firmware level. After firmware updates, previously working chips are often rejected.

Is region coding legal?

It is a commercial practice used by several manufacturers. Whatever your view of it, the printer will still refuse a mismatched cartridge.

Should I refuse firmware updates to keep using compatibles?

Firmware updates also carry security and reliability fixes, so declining them has its own costs. Weigh both sides before deciding.
