LabelWriter printing blank labels

Dymo LabelWriter prints blank labels

The printer feeds labels and the software reports success, but the labels come out with nothing on them. LabelWriters are direct thermal devices with no ink or toner, so blank output nearly always means the heat-sensitive side is not facing the printhead, or the printhead is dirty or failing. Newer models also reject labels without a recognised authentication mark.

What causes it

  • The label roll is loaded the wrong way round
  • The printhead is dirty or coated with adhesive residue
  • Third-party labels are not recognised on models that check for authenticity
  • The roll has been exposed to heat or sunlight and the coating is spent
  • The printhead has failed

How to fix it, in order

Work down the list and stop when the printer recovers. The steps are ordered from most likely and least invasive to last resort.

  1. Check the label orientation

Direct thermal labels only print on the coated side. Scratch a label with a fingernail: the side that leaves a dark mark must face the printhead. Reload the roll the other way round if you scratched the underside.

  2. Reload the roll correctly

Open the printer, lift out the spool, place the roll so the labels feed from underneath with the printable side upwards, and slide the guide against the edge of the label stock. Feed a couple of labels using the feed button to confirm they track straight.

  3. Clean the printhead

Switch the printer off and unplug it, then wipe the thin printhead strip with a cotton swab lightly dampened with isopropyl alcohol. Let it dry completely before reloading. Adhesive and paper dust build up here and are a very common cause of blank or partly blank labels.

  4. Test with a genuine Dymo roll

Fit a roll of genuine Dymo labels if you have one. Recent LabelWriter models check for an authentication mark, and third-party rolls without it may feed but not print, which looks exactly like a hardware fault.

  5. Print a test from Dymo Connect

Open Dymo Connect, select the printer and print a simple text label. If that produces a blank while the software reports success, the issue is at the printer rather than in the document you were originally printing.

  6. Check the label roll's age and storage

Direct thermal stock loses sensitivity if stored in heat or sunlight and can go blank or produce very faint print. Try a fresh roll kept somewhere cool and dark before concluding the printer has failed.

  7. Reinstall the printer software

Remove the printer in Settings › Bluetooth & devices › Printers & scanners, reinstall Dymo Connect, and add the printer again. A driver mismatch can send jobs the printer accepts but cannot render, though this is less common than the media causes above.

When it is not worth fixing yourself

If you would rather not work through this alone, a printer specialist can take a look with you on a screen-share and tell you honestly whether the machine is worth saving.

Frequently asked questions

Does a LabelWriter use ink?

No. It is direct thermal, printing by heating the coated label surface, which is why blank output usually means orientation or printhead problems.

Will third-party labels work?

Older models generally accept them. Newer LabelWriters check for an authentication mark and may refuse rolls without it.

Why are my labels faint rather than blank?

Usually old or heat-damaged stock, or a printhead that needs cleaning. Try a fresh roll first.
