HP error 0xc19a0020 (ink system failure after cartridge change)

0xc19a0020 appears when the printer cannot complete the ink system initialisation after cartridges are installed or swapped. The firmware expects each cartridge to respond with valid chip data and expects the printhead to prime with ink; when one of those conditions fails it reports this code. Compared with other 0xc19a codes, this one is more often a cartridge problem than a dead printhead.

What causes it

  • A cartridge installed in the wrong colour slot
  • Protective tape still covering the cartridge vent or contacts
  • A refilled cartridge with a chip that reports 'empty' or is unreadable
  • Air in the ink lines after a cartridge ran completely dry
  • Dried ink on the printhead preventing the priming cycle from completing

How to fix it, in order

Work down the list and stop when the printer recovers. The steps are ordered from most likely and least invasive to last resort.

  1. Check every cartridge is in the correct slot

Open the door and match the colour icon on each cartridge to the icon on the carriage. The HP 564 and 920 families use slots that physically accept the wrong cartridge, and a swapped cartridge triggers 0xc19a0020 immediately.

  2. Remove the orange tab and any tape

New HP cartridges ship with an orange pull tab over the air vent. If the tab is still on, or the vent is blocked with tape, ink cannot flow and the printer reports an ink system failure. Pull the tab, reinstall and close the door.

  3. Reseat all cartridges until they click

Press each cartridge down into its slot until you hear a click and the tab sits flush. A cartridge that is only partly seated gives intermittent electrical contact and fails the initialisation test.

  4. Power cycle the printer

Turn the printer off, unplug for a minute, then reconnect and power on. The printer will re-run the ink system initialisation with the cartridges now seated correctly.

  5. Swap the suspected cartridge for a genuine one

If the ink level display shows one cartridge as missing or unknown, replace it with a new HP cartridge. The printer usually identifies the problem slot on screen when you press the More Information option.

  6. Clean the printhead if the error persists

Remove the printhead, soak the nozzle plate on a warm damp cloth for five minutes, wipe the contacts, dry and refit. Run the Clean Printhead tool from Setup, Tools.

  7. Reset the ink system from the support menu

Use your model's support menu combination to reach Resets and run a Semi Full Reset. This clears the stored failure flag so the printer attempts initialisation again from scratch.

When it is not worth fixing yourself

If you would rather not work through this alone, a printer specialist can take a look with you on a screen-share and tell you honestly whether the machine is worth saving.

Frequently asked questions

I just installed new cartridges and got 0xc19a0020. Are they faulty?

Usually not. Check the orange vent tab was removed and each cartridge is in the correct colour slot and clicked down. A cartridge in the wrong slot is the most common cause immediately after a change.

Will a refilled cartridge cause 0xc19a0020?

It can if the chip was not reset or was damaged during refilling. The printer reads the chip during initialisation and fails the test if the data is invalid.

Does this error mean the printhead is dead?

Not necessarily. This code is more often a cartridge or priming problem. Only after cartridges have been ruled out and the printhead has been cleaned should you assume the printhead is the cause.
